Hosting webstore

Hi There,

As others have said there is no 'one solution fits all'. What sort of web store are you building? Which ecommerce platform are you using? Who and where are your target customers? What level of support are you looking for from the hosting company that you will choose?

Just a few points as food for thought :)

Cheers

I don't need a large scale solution. My supplier requires me to have an online shop. However, I am planning to focus on ebay and Amazon first.

So I suppose the question has to be specified:
Which shopping cart do you recommend as interim solution (less than 100 skus)
and which hosts would be suitable.

Hi There,

Sorry, from your original post I had not realized that you were still undecided about which ecommerce platform to go for :)
In this case I would thoroughly recommend Prestashop (and I am biased as this is the solution that we normally build and host for our clients). Prestashop is a fully professional, open license - free to use ecommerce platform. In my opinion its main advantages over Magento are:

  1. Much easier to use which means that you would be able to manage your shop yourself rather than pay someone else to do it for you.
  2. Much faster loading speeds.
  3. Normally cheaper and better value for money.
In addition you do not need to look at this as an 'interim' solution. With Prestashop you can have an unlimited number of products, unlimited categories, customers and orders, hence this can be your permanent solution.
Regarding hosting you can actually find many companies who could host a Prestashop online shop for you, but as they are our competitors, I will not list them here :D

Please feel free to PM me if you need and more help or free advice with this.

Best Regards,

Tim

I don't need a large scale solution. My supplier requires me to have an online shop.

Start off by finding a host with http://www.softaculous.com/ install OpenCart with the one click installer, add your logo through the admin area. Add your products and you're done. Simplest and cheapest way to get something online quickly.

As it starts to grow you can think about using extensions, a redesign, and getting upgraded hosting if traffic requires it.

Magento is solid, Wordpress can also be used an ecommerce site. - Our software is compatible with both and can provide you with not only live chat as mentioned earlier but a synchronized viewing system to showcase your merchandise.

    I wouldn't have recommend Wordpress for e-commerce.

    hummm...

    Systems: Magento or Prestashop
Hosting: HostGator baby account (yes, it isn't in the UK).. but it is dirt cheep + 24/7 excellent online support + unlimited bandwidth + unlimited storage + Cpanel

... forget about wordpress or joomla ecommerce systems - run away from the developers who suggest them.

If you will manage to grow BIG - you can start thinking about more expensive (not always better) hosting plans, ssl certificates and other good but not vital features.

Your store can be hosted anywhere... it isn't the case any more that hosting country influences your rankings.

Whatsoever others will say - you DON'T need dedicated servers or any other overpriced solutions..

Experience? .. more than 10 years in the industry ;)

Invest in outstanding customer support - the key to success.

    Good luck,
    Helmuts
