The geographic location of the domain name registrar DOES NOT affects SEO.

The geographic location of the web hosting server DOES affect SEO.

If your website targets an audience in a specific location / country, then it is best to host it in that country. If it serves the global audience, then the server location does not matter.

If you're targeting the UK then it certainly is best have a UK based server from a UK web hosting company. The distance to your key visitors will be shorter, which can result in lower latency and a better experience for them. Google also takes site performance and page loading into consideration for it's ranking now, so there's some SEO benefit too.

For the domain, I believe Google will use e.g. the TLD, such as .co.uk as a signal for your location. So if you purchase a .co.uk domain and don't want to target the UK for example, then you'd need to change your location in Webmaster Tools, otherwise Google may well target you to the UK.

Obviously that's an odd example, but hopefully it illustrates the point.

Google typically uses the site's content, language, the domain's extension and other signals to determine the geographic target.

For the sake of a more complete picture…

While optimised website speed is certainly of great significance, one of the most important aspects of SEO is the relevance of a Website / page.

Server location is one of the relevancy factors because search engines (particularly Google, which matters most) DO look at the IP address of a server, and they are more likely to consider a Website more useful / relevant to users in the country / region where it is hosted.

However, there is another important variable in the equation - the domain name. Country-coded domain names, such as .co.uk for UK, are considered to be convincing enough indicators of the target geographic location and should outweigh the server’s location.

If a Website has a generic domain name, such as .com, the geographic target can be indicated using Google and Bing webmaster tools. This information, among other factors, is used by the search engines to determine how a Website appears in search results.

Our recommendation would to be to host your content in the target market. i.e. where your users are based. If you have a global business with customers all over the world you may consider using a CDN (Content Delivery Network) or locating servers around the world and using a GTM (Global Traffic Manager) to deliver content to the user from the closest web server to them to decrease page load times / latency.

SEO; If you have a website targeting the UK market it would be recommended to have a UK registered IP address serving your content along with a UK i.e. .co.uk domain name.

Hope that helps...
