im not totally sure what this means but it seems to happen quite frequently on my site if ive spent an afternoon adding new products etc

is it likely to be one of these limits causing it?

RAM (Pmem) - 1gb
Number of processes (Nproc) - 100

are these limits the norm or particularly low?

    Hi Matt

To be fair, the only people who can answer this are your hosting company. This is not the sort of question any of us could answer as only you and your host have full access to your hosting account to see what its doing when you get that message.

All any outsider can do is speculate, and that's not fair to you or your hosting company :)

1GB of ram is very generous, so long as you are allowed to use it all.
Our shared hosting customers are allowed to consume upto 1GB of ram, no probs.

There are other limits too like CPU, number of files, entry processes and more...

Best to consult your hosting tech support ASAP, call them and have a chat on the phone about it.

Again, give your host a call because some hosts do show the CPU in your conterol panel and some turn it off so you cant see it..

For example we have it enabled all the time, and we also provide historical usage charts so you can see regularly what your average usage is and if this is a "one off or is it normally close to the limit" so you can do something about it, but only your host will know what they provide you with to see.

Ask them what their CPU limit is too...

Many may try to dodge that question by saying "Fair usage" or "We dont have limits" which is BS, every resource has a limit. Ours for example is 100% of 1 Core, long as you like, some can have 2 cores if really needed, but most shared hosts set limits anywhere between 2% and 15%..

Call them and speak to them about it :)

    Hi Matt,

The CPU usage should be listed under the Statistics section on the right, which should also detail your memory usage, disk usage and so forth.

Otherwise you can click CPU and Concurrent Connection Usage under the Metrics section.

That should be made available to you. Otherwise you can ask your host what your limits and your usage are.

They should be able to give you a reason for you reaching the resource limit and give you guidance on what you can do.

As for your quoted limits, they're not low. We provide 1GB of RAM and 100% of one CPU core.
Plenty of hosts, especially more commercial ones will provide far less though.

You're likely hitting your CPU limit. In which case you can try to optimise the website, upgrade, or switch.

    Best of luck,

    Dan

I would not have thought with those limits that a few site updates would be the cause of them but without knowing how busy your site is it is hard to know. I would check your site statistics. In cpanel the latest visitors page is a good place to see if your site is currently being hit by someone maybe trying to brute force your admin or find a backdoor. This is very common and easily missed by your host if it is intermittent but could be the cause. Otherwise you could just have quite a busy site (great for you) and you simply need to consider upgrading.

I would point out that not all hosts put an automatic hard limit like this, We don't, and unless the resource usage is causing server issues we tend to monitor and alert rather then automatically cutting off a site like your current host seems to be doing.

hosts have confirmed that its a resource / process limit

    "Entry Processes 30 / 30 and CPU Usage 96 / 100 have been exceeded"

"96 / 100 in CPU usage in cPanel interface means that your site consumed 1 core of Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 processor - 2,00 GHz"

it seems to happen most when i have been adding a lot of new products to the site, bulk uploading images etc

i am now looking at upgrading my hosting, but am a bit confused by shared hosting / cloud server / dedicated server ???

The amount of resources you have does not matter much if your website is tearing it up.

Furthermore, you have to read into the fine print. No host will give you 1 real core (get real) unless on dedicated. All else is vCore (virtual core) which can range from host to host, but if you want numbers it'll normally range between 1/50 to 1/100 of a real core on a VPS.

Also if the word "burst" is anywhere on the description, run away as fast as you can!

Before you think your host is bad as some others have implied, take into account how much you're paying and also that your website is probably WordPress (terrible performance) and you're uploading bulk images which are processed for thumbnails etc every time.

I believe that you have to talk the customer service of your website. If ever they offered you the upgrade hardware to your hosting and expensive, it's time to find a better webhosting with affordable price.

The fact is that your host is hard limiting your resources (i.e. forcing your site offline due to a short temporary overage), most hosts that I have dealt with (including us) do not hard limit, we have limits but they are soft, you can go over them and the system won't insta-ban your site. With us your site would have to either be consistently over for long periods or causing major slowdown to the server affecting other sites and only an admin would be able to force your site offline after a warning.

It doesn't necessarily mean that the hosting company is having problems.

A 508 error message typically means your account is constantly exceeding the resources assigned to it. So you might just have low resources assigned to the account which can be edited either in your cPanel (if you have one) or the support team at the hosting company may be able to raise your settings so that you no longer get these errors.

It could however indicate a poorly programmed website, but they should be able to tell you.
