Hosting and SEO

Hello All,

Thanks for reading..... We launched an e-commerce website back in November and the website has been ranking page 1 and 2 for the major keywords..... The market is highly competitive but as this is our first website we are wondering is this a good SEO company we are using or should be on a solid page 1 now?

Our next question is that does website hosting effect SEO / Rankings? Obviusly hosting companies say yes it is a big player in ranking but I can't seem to find to much on it.

For example if our site was hosted on a cloud system with UK Fast would it rank better than if we were listed with someone like Linode or Go Daddy ?

Thanks for any help !

Cause and effect get mixed up sometimes. There are many elements that impact on SEO, the main one being a really slow response time on a dynamic site, as the spiders will back out of the site out of server respect, which will of course impact on your site being indexed.

Google want the world on https, but they can go whistle, they also say that site speed has an impct but they then confirmed it is so minute it is not worth worrying about. UNLESS of course the site is slow to load, which is more likely to be poor coding than poor hosting.

In short they say the speed of the site can impact on your rankings, and Google now renders sites as part of the crawling and indexing process where traditionally it just used a text browser.

Define 'major keywords' are we talking 'car insurance' or 'bad credit mortgage'?

I would be pretty happy with being on page 1 and 2 after less than a year, especially as you say you are in a highly competitive market.

I´d probably trust your SEO company to recommend whether you need to move to a faster server. They should be able to have a look at your page load time and decide if a VPS or even just a shared SSD based hosting would be beneficial.
SSD based shared hosting is not that much more expensive than traditional hosting either.

You just launched in november and were ranking page 1 and 2?
I'd say you had a bloody good SEO company.

Without seeing how they have achieved this that is impossible to say. it is possible to get great rankings VERY quickly by using black hat methods, the question then is WHEN will Google penalise you.

If you are happy with churn and burn of domains then go for BH, otherwise it is the slow and steady. Also the OP says highly competitive, but we only have his word for that.

Maybe I am not making myself clear :)

Forget WHAT is causing the issue, a slow site is not good for SEO as it is a poor user experience.

You can put a crap site on the best hosting and it will still be poor, you can put a good site on crap hosting and it will still be poor.

Like everything in SEO nothing is black and white, uptime is important.

Hey Jake. As mentioned previously, there are a number of factors which can negatively affect your search engine rankings, including slow page load speeds, which can be caused by your hosting company (if they don't know what they are doing). I would advise sticking with a reputable company who uses high grade CPUs so you can take advantage of their higher clock speed. What e-commerce platform are you running on?

First page means nothing, why ?

1st spot receives 35%~ of the traffic
2nd spot receives 15% ~
3rd spot receives 5% ~

Hosting effect on SEO:

How fast is your website, and the location of hosting server.

If you are not receiving more than 200-400 visitors per day, than in most cases the regular hosting is good enough. Google looks at how fast your website pages load, the faster they load the higher SEO benefit you get.

Both the location of the server and hosting (how fast your pages load) are only a tiny fraction of all the factors that Google looks at. I would say less than 1-2%, so you can imagine, that it's not all that important. Just make sure that the loading speed is average / higher than average, and that the location of the hosting server is in the same country as your business ( the terms you are trying to rank for).

I'm not surprised if there are some websites ranking in a short period of time but the question is does the site maintain its position for a long time or it will be gone like the other new websites. Establish your site first because other tough competitors are years in the top rankings and still consistent in their position because of the reputation.

Hosting definitely plays a factor but so does the coding of your site. If you have horrid hosting and a lean site, that's as bad as, the best hosting and a bloated site. I'd recommend using the best host you can afford, with a CDN, and mix that with an SSL for that extra sprinkling of Google juice (as someone once called it). Then work to get your code as lean as possible while bringing any images you have on your site down to a minimum and optimised.

SEO factors like this tend to be more about how they improve the user experience. The better the user experience, the better the rankings from these sort of factors - well that's the theory anyways.

As an online customer, I like fast, responsive sites, that I can trust my personal details will be secure, and that my item will be delivered as ordered. Work to that as a rule of thumb.

    Hope that helps a little.

To answer your question, Yes the quality and reputation of hosting provider is taken into account.
But changing the hosting provider wouldn't take you to page one on its own, you need a marketing plan and strategy that includes SEO
