Is there any reason you are only looking at US based hosts?

Have used Hostgator in the past to run a site in the USA. I would not use them again, service was up and down like a tarts knickers!

If your after US hosting try Linode

You might want to provide more details like the amount of resources you need? If you have any budget restriction and location preference as well.
And there is not best hosting as such it all depends on what suits your needs.

I'm using Hostgator on managed VPS and I find their support very good and no issues but they've just hiked up there pricing, they're no longer competitive - time to migrate to home soil

They are all the same, all owned by Endurance International Group.

Better options exist.

Yes that's right all are owned by EIG .. so you wont find much difference.
