I don't do bulk emailing but some days the amount of emails I reply to or send can be in the mid hundreds.

What (if any) do hosts consider to be too many emails sent in a day?

I don't think it would be a problem with most hosts if you send this amount of emails once in few days but if you are sending several hundred emails on daily basis then it can be a problem and your host may not permit you to perform such actions, but if you have a good host, they will also have some solution for you.

There is a limit set by the hosting providers like 300 - 500 emails per hour for shared hosting users, 800 - 1000 emails per hour for VPS and 2000 - 3000 emails per hour for dedicated server clients. As long as you are sending legitimate emails and there are no complaints against the emails then there should not be any problem.

Typically with a decent host hourly limits are simply put in place to prevent spam and compromised accounts from causing problems, so if you want to send more for legitimate reasons then you can expect them to work that out for you.

If you are going to send marketing emails on a regular basis then using a bulk email tool is a good idea, especially if a lot of your recipients are on the same mail server - as sending a flood of emails can get be used as a signal to mark you as spam - so it's generally better to space these out.

But as you're not sending bulk marketing emails that's not a worry.

A VPS and/or dedicated server should not have any limits in place. Anyway, if a limit was in place one could very easily remove it (assuming the proper access is given which it i in most cases).

Yeah, that's right, a VPS or Dedicated Server won't have email limits. One of the key points of having your own server is that you're in full control and have full root access.
It's possible a provider could limit emails sent for a VPS in their terms of service, but that's certainly not something we do or have seen.
The only limit on a server should be the monthly bandwidth (transfer) and storage, and it's up the user how they use those resources.
I wouldn't expect even very large volumes of emails to cause any problems for a well specified server.

    Hi

As mentioned bulk mail shouldn't really go from a shared server and on a VPS or Cloud Server you set your own limits.

However if you are going to send bulk mail from your VPS or Cloud Server then you should register as a bulk sender with some of the main players of recipients so to speak!

Do bear in mind that even if you register as a bulk sender that you still have to build up a reputation for your email sending IP(s)

Dan mentioned spacing emails to the same host out, this is absolutely necessary to avoid problems.

Also rattling 1000's of emails out as fast as you can will also cause problems and unless you are warning people of an emergency is also unnecessary! and should be spaced out over a reasonable period of time.

Both of the above can be achieved automatically by a free mailer like phpList I believe.

    Thanks

    Paul

Basic webhostng (shared hosting,) has a limits, it`s anty spam policy. We have also set that limit for some of ours servers, limit are from 500-1000 mails per day, but you cant send email every day.

We have also offers for email senders, for 5k, 10, 50k per month, a few server locations all over the world. Please contact PM if you interested.

The volume of emails isn't really something to worry about, it's the number of spam complaints/unsubscribe requests that hosts will be concerned with.

I use Mandrill which is a dedicated service to manage emails/templates/unsubscriptions etc, that way I can track the number of emails sent, any errors, how many spam complaints I get and automatically remove emails that want to unsubscribe.

It's free for the first few thousand emails/month and easy to integrate, I recommend giving it a try.
