I dislike HMRC with a passion. Every time I have to deal with them I end up getting angry. Today however I actually got a problem resolved fairly quickly and even though the problem could have been far more ridiculous it was actually sorted out.

Basically I need a UTR number because I wanted to register for employers PAYE & VAT etc however I discovered I needed to enroll for self assessment.
I tried to enrol for self assessment and was told I am already registered. I had no idea about this and had no idea I had a UTR number so needed to contact HMRC.

First of all I tried phoning, I called 3 times for a minimum of 30 minutes upto 45 minutes each time without getting through. I ended up hanging up in frustration. I tried multiple numbers as well.

I then discovered I could live chat which was answered within moments.
The lady asked me to verify some details and told meI was already registered for self assessment since 1999!
They can't provide a new UTR number and will only send you a copy of the UTR number if you tell them the nature of the self employment (from 1999). Luckily I guessed right and apparently my UTR number is in the post although it could take 14 days to arrive..
It seems that if you register for self assessment but never use it you are still given a UTR number and are expected to know it and keep documents with it on for over 15 years.

What would I have done if I couldn't remember the nature of my self employment all those years ago? How would I have registered for PAYE?
