HMRC Registration - Two jobs

I am currently in full-time employment but also have been doing some online trading since about 3-4 months ago. I believe that you should register yourself as self-employed within 3 months of trading which is why I am currently in the process of doing so.

The problem that I have is that there do not seem to be any clear guidelines on the HMRC for my situation. I just want to see if anybody is able to help me clarify a few things.

If i am buying & selling goods using my own name (buy from retailer and sell on ebay) does this constitute me as being a 'business'? because the HMRC Webpage for registering as self employed only mentions 'Business taxes', 'Business name', 'Nature of Business' etc whereas I dont actually have a brick & mortar business or even a business name?

Another one of the questions on the form says:

"If you are working for one person or firm only, you may be employed rather than self-employed. If you are unsure, you can check your employment status using the Employment Status Indicator tool by following the link below."

Are you working for one person or firm only? (Yes or No)

I really am not sure what I should answer for that question because i Work for a company but at the same time I also work for myself, and it states "you may be employed rather than self-employed" which makes me think that you can only be one or the other?

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance.

If you are buying and selling goods in your own name then you are self employed and need to register. You do have a business the nature of which is buying and selling goods. Your business name is your own name - alternatively you could have used a business name such as Chud Goods in which case you would be MR X trading as Chud Goods.

You can be both employed and self employed. The employment status checker if for use in circumstances when you are carrying out work for a single customer in the same way that an employee would.

Hi anna, thanks for your swift reply.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh right I see that clarifies the situation for me more clearly, Thank you.

So in my case should I put 'No' as the answer to that question? I only assume that because I use multiple platforms to sell the goods that I have bought (Ebay, Gumtree, Forums) and then also having an employer for my full-time job.

But then again I do only 'work' for one person because i assume that my trading isnt classified as me working for someone because I can choose to do it when I wish etc?
