I thought this Community might have a rant section but have not found it yet ;)

Recently I had to file a return for a micro entity that had start-up expenditure just as the pandemic took off and then was shuttered. Of course did not benefit from any support mechanisms. Once started it did little trading for the tax year in question, so no profit or tax, therefore a filing should be a piece of cake.
Although I have software, issues concerning what exactly it shares in uploading to HMRC at the eleventh hour, prompted me to avail of the HMRC's online filing service.

I have been around the world and lived in developing world countries we used to call the third world when I was a child. But I have never seen anything like this before and hopefully will never again.

There are more than 70 (SEVENTY) web screens in the work flow, that consolidates into a 36 page submitted html. What a software submits is nothing like that
If you are not familiar with how HMRC does things and how they treat some line items, you are likely to wonder "will they ask for a particular piece of data on the next page or where?" And as the entries are used in computations further along, you may find yourself having to redo the stuff so the numbers balance. This has nothing to do with having your numbers sorted and finalised.

It took four hours to complete and they ask the same question at various stages, multiple times. Do they think they are working some kind of NUDGE strategy, to catch you out? Or are they just genuine bog-standard idiots?

Like a lot of .GOV stuff it is labelled as BETA. But why ANY intellect would think this is the right way of doing this, is beyond me. There is absolutely no reason why this cannot be done on 5 or 6 pages maximum. As the process was pissing me off, I started to screen-shot the work flow and captured 63 of the web pages for a pdf to upload here, but it looks like a file like that cannot be shared.

I fear for this country, because it is historically conditioned to believe it is world leading and world beating. But is now just falling apart, and Bolshe about it.
Open for business does not look like this.

HMRC - in fact, all government departments - can hardly ever have been described as "world leading", and anyone who has ever dealt with one would no doubt say the same.

I would write a letter to your MP and attach the file you have created and see if he or she (or it) takes any interest.

It is world beating because nobody in the world can compete with the UK's bureaucracy which is unbeatable.

What happened to that government department that was set up with a view to reducing red tape?
