Hi, I'm new to the forum, and hoping someone may be able to clarify something when it comes to van insurance.

I'm a gardener, and licensed with the Environment Agency to dispose of waste. I intend to carry & dispose of mainly green waste from my customers properties, and on occasion carry mixed loads from house clearances etc. Am I required to be insured for Hire & Reward on my van insurance? The insurers I have spoken with have said its a grey area because I will be carrying things that don't belong to me, even though what I will be carrying isn't of any value

The difference in price for insurance with and without H&R is massive, I therefore don't want to spend out unnecessarily for insurance I might not need.

can anyone clarify this?

I would insure it for business but carrying your own goods . I would then write into any terms and conditions with your customer that once you have collected any waste it then becomes your property and responsibility.
This would not effect the traceability of any waste as you would still hold records

I don't think that you need a Hire and Reward insurance cover for your business. The insurance allows you to carry other people's goods in return for payment. As you mention what you carry hasn't any value and buying this type of insurance cover will cost a lost. If you moved furniture or other valuable goods, I would strongly advise you to get the insurance cover. But in this case we're mainly talking about waste. To distance yourself from operating in the grey area, you should do as @JEREMY HAWKE advises, which is to put in your Ts & Cs that the collected waste becomes your property. Then you're carrying your own goods.
