I run a ethical design business working from home I am looking for printers with green credentials. Anybody know anybody good at a fair price for future business.

Hi Donna,

All printers should be able to offer an ethical green product, however the cost of this is unfortunately usually higher as recycled and part recycled stocks simply cost more money.

we get calls from companies who want a green product but also want to pay the same price or even less than our standard products. Unfortunately this isn't always possible as the additional costs have to come from somewhere and the profit margins in print these days is almost none existant.

100% recycled doesn't always offer the finish people want either as a glossy surface cannot be acheived on recycled stock, hence most being 80% recycled to allow for a coating which cannot to date be made from recycled paper.

It's something that I think most printers now offer!

We don't yet hold the FSC chain of custody/ISO although we do have an environmental management certificate from Abricon, details here.

The vast majority of paper is supplied by Howard Smith with all of our standard flyer, leaflet and booklet work being done using Regency which is an FSC/PEFC accredited stock, we can also work with Greencoat uncoated/silk/gloss which contain upto 100% recycled fibers.

All energy used on our site is reduced to an absolute minimum and is provided by Ecotricity.

Every item used during production is recycled or reprocessed and wastage during runs is practically eliminated.

So we do quite a bit, but then I'd hope most other printers do as well!

I have experience of printing on recycled stock but I do find it limiting as to who can supply products at cost effective prices it tends to be the larger printing companies which as a designer I find it hard to build a relationship with.

Also it would be nice to work with a supplier that has the same working ethic as my own company regarding the environment,

When ever possable we always produce all our print, using http://www.responsibleprint.info/ this means that every part of the supply chain has been examined to measure and reduce the environmental impact

Here is an outline of what it covers

• SO 14001 certified printer
• paper must contain at least 50% recycled fibre content
• papers with virgin fibre content must have FSC or PEFC certification
• all process inks used are vegetable oil based
• any gloss, semitone or matt laminates used must be biodegradable and home compostable
• polywraps for mailing outers should be as thin as possible and can be biodegradable if appropriate*
• the entire life cycle of the printed item has undergone carbon footprint analysis and a payment has been made to offset the associated CO2 emissions
• rigorous, innovative and genuine environmental protection schemes are in place within the supply chain for further details about what kind of measures have been implemented by the approved Responsible Print® printers
• every quote and invoice carry details of the CO2 emissions associated with the project, giving you unparalleled accountability and ability to assess the impact of your print

Hi there, I've been speaking to a fantastic guy at a company called The Print Doctor who has gathered some fantastic quotes for me across all sorts of ethical print options. I've spoken to quite a few companies and these are the only guys who have been able to drive prices down to a level that could work for us.

Deffo worth getting a quote from them on print of all types in my opinion, I think the fact that they have big buying power with printers thanks to their sizeable clents like Boots and Astrazenica really works in favour of the little guy. About time!

alocalprinter.com offer eco friendly printing
but i'll warn you - a client had some uncoated cards printed and they were very errr - "fluffy" would probably be the closest word!

I wasn't impressed, whether it was just a one off I don't know - but they're not too badly priced, might be worth asking for some samples first or just doing a small run...
