Hey,

I am Carla, and I am currently setting up a small traditional sweetie shop in the North of Scotland.

I have spent many, many months researching the area of business I intend to succeed in. A retail unit has just become available for rent in my local area, which has gave me a good boot up the back side to get on with things.

I look forward to hearing from anyone with advice.

Thanks
Carla

First work out a two or three year business plan including the most important part the cashflow projections

Assume your sales are 25% and also 50% lower that you originally expected and see if the cashflow still works

Do your research on footfall and start up costs including deposits for many things

Try and get a one year break clause on the lease ( highly unlikely but a good safety escape if you can) remember if you sign a 5 year lease and then it does not work out and you shut up shop, you still have to pay the rent for the rest of the lease term and these-days you will be required to sign a personnel guarantee even if trading as a limited company

Be sensible with the size of the shop as many work well in very small places and a average shop would be far to large to fill up
