Help with Windows Startup Problem?

The other day my Windows XP System on my PC started displaying a user account window during start up. This window asks, "Which user account do you want to use to run this program?"

Not sure what caused this but it is very annoying. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it?

Although it is the Windows credentials box, it is probably an application that is set to run with the runas command.

I would recommend clicking on cancel to that box, and following Paul's advice to check that programs are running on start up.

Check your startup folder on your start menu as well to see what is listed there.

There is nothing in the start up folder that looks like it could cause this.

It's this window, http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_runasshort.htm

Yes, thats the Windows runas dialog. It will appear if a application uses the runas command.

Your best bet will be to Click on Start > Run > Type msconfig > Press Enter.

Go to the startup tab. Then go through the list and check there is nothing in the command column that starts with runas.

That isn't a conclusive way, but its a good starting point.

You wouldn't have a disc in the dvd/cd drive trying to run would you ?

Also some hardwear could be set to up date, look for the words auto update in the add & remove programmes section.

Failing that, restart choosing "start XP with clena boot" then run a virus check and check the autoruns again as suggested.

Nothing in CD drives and nothing out of the ordinary trying to update (I take it you mean software?)
