Can any one explain to me why Google never picks up any backlinks to my site. Yahoo picks up 43. All the web 14 and so on but Google, nothing, ever and my site has been running a while now. I even have feeder sites that it still never picks up the links:(.
Any explanation would be appreciated.

how do you know that Google hasn't indexed yours? Have your done your research properly? How many back links do you think you should have? And finally you may want to post your URL if you don't have any problem so that we can quickly give it a check.

I see you are with 1and1. There was a big discussion about 1and1 blocking Googlebot a while ago.

Seems hard to believe to me.

I often worry about using 1and1 as their servers are in Germany and this can effect local searches.

According to Google, Googlebot last visited your site on 13 Feb 2008

Ummm, very interesting thread. I too keep getting all the same problems. I did not know much about web sites when I set up with 1and1 and am learning as much as possible but it takes time. Even though most of those postings were 2006 it seems the problem still exists. May look into changing my service provider.
Thanks for the pointers.

I must say that I have never found a perfect hosting company.

Its the nature of IT in general that you have problems. Also with a big company they are going to have good and bad staff.

You will find <company name>sucks.com for just about every company on the planet!

I use streamline.net and have found their support service both superb and rubbish.

I also have a couple of websites with 1and1 and have been just about happy with them.

So don't jump to conclusions. If you think you have a problem, at least try contacting their support service about it. It might be something they can fix.

Apologies for the contradicting posts :|

Thanks for the help Mike.
I must admit though, I have a freind that I am trying to help who has a 1and1 account also. The replies leave a lot to be desired. They are running us around in circles.
No one seems to be able to give a sensible answerand all I can see from this is that their backup staff do not have sufficent knowledge to deal properly with problems, leaving the customer to sort it out on his own. Not a good service.

Good luck anyway.

One last thing. Ignore what I said about German 1and1 servers as I don't think the problem would apply to you anyway as you have a .co.uk address which I think takes preference over the server location anyway.

I've got the same problem, i've submitted my site to over 100 directories, with good page ranks (5+) and also got links on plenty of other places, forums, blogs etc. but when i do a check it says i have 4, but then i search for my website (www[dot]bcomputing[dot]co[dot]uk), type that into google, and pages and pages come up of sites, other than mine that have that in, but it doesnt pick them up as links!

I am beginning to think that, despite every one saying links are important that maybe they are not as important as they were. Lets face it, if every site had links here there and everywhere it would be like billions of spaghetti junctions all over the place all pointing to each other.
Maybe content and seo is more important than links now. Just a thought because the whole thing of getting your site noticed is clouded in mystery and some of that is caused by Google themselves. Try finding out what you have to do to get a site on line properly from a complete novice point of view. It's not easy. I am not a complete novice now by the way but still a long way to go.

I think you folks possibly misunderstand what Google's link:siteURL command actually tells you? It does not tell you all the links to your sites from other sites. It only tells you a representation of them - it's been that way for a few years now.

Now, realistically, Google being Google, the God of all things search and WWW, if your link is on a website somewhere then Google almost certainly knows about it. That said, if those links are on a rarely spidered pages then maybe it hasn't respidered it with your link on there.

If you really really really want to know if it does, then find the page in question via a google search, look at Google's cached copy of the page and if your link is on the cached page then Google knows about it. This process gets a little bit dull after 100 pagechecks though.

Again, being realistic, I think it's a fair assumption that if yahoo knows about it then Google probably does too. So using yahoo's site explorer tool will give some idea of whether it's been found by any search engines. It will also give you a much fuller picture about backlinks to a site, better than Google's deliberate partial picture.

Agree with most of that Nass.

also the cashe date on the site is july 9th, so not sure where the user who said it was April got that from.

Forget link: it aint working on google, use yahoo, and if you have few enough links, check them out yourself. I have a script that actually cross matches. IE if a link is found on msn or yahoo, it will check the google cache to give a definitive answer of caching or not.
