HELP! WEEE Compliance for selling a clock??!

I run a home accessories/gift website. I am a sole trader based from home with a small turnover. I sell a clock that takes an aa battery and today I have received a letter from vca.gov.uk telling me that I am not complying witht eh WEEE Regulation 2006 which I have never heard of before.
I do not understand what I have to do other than offer to take back people's old clocks if they want to... do I have to sign up to something that's going to cost me a lot of money.
I'm only a tiny home based business, I can't afford to spend 100s for the sake of selling a couple of clocks trying to make a living.

Yes, you do need to comply with WEEE. It'll cost you around £150-£200 a year. If you make less profit than this from selling your electrical & electronic products, just drop them from your stock range. It sucks, but that's life.

Is it not possible to comply by offering to accept returned items and then disposing of them according to the regulations - why does it have to cost £150-£200 a year if I can take them to a recycling centre? In reality NOONE is going to return an old clock to me, at least I very much doubt it.

Because you can't take your trade waste to your local household recycling centre.

Of course, and all the companies set up to administer it.

Just be glad that prices have dropped so much - when it was first introduced in 2006 we had to pay £1500.

I have reread the letter and I do not have to sign up and pay to comply as long as I make provisions to dispose of the waste with a licensed waste contractor which seems relatively straightforward according to my local website....
