Hello everyone, I don't expect anyone here to tell me what to get into of course but few guidelines would be helpful.

I know google ad words and market samuri are very helpful but please let me know if you know more tools out there that can help me find my niche.

I did a search last night about the key word I was interested in doing and I got 365,000 global montly searches and only 33,000 UK montly searches. Luckly for me, the competition is very low for that word. How is the competition being worked out?

My question is that how many global and local searches should there be before I decide if the market is big enough?

Thanks

My question is that how many global and local searches should there be before I decide if the market is big enough?

Monthly search volumes, as a minimum criteria for niche selection, have two aspects:
1) Is there enough activity for this phrase, so that once I achieve a top 5 ranking (or top 3/2/1), a sufficient amount of traffic will come, and buy, thus justifying the pursuit.
2) Is there enough other activity in related phrases, synonymous with the niche, so that (blah blah same as above)

While item #1 is a 1 hit wonder, item #2 adds time/cost into the equation. If there are sufficient synonyms to make the niche interesting, how much more is it going to cost me to win enough of them to pay the bills.

Here's a few benchmarks comparing what Google says are monthly searches, and what actual traffic was achieved in a month, globally, for several terms ranking #1 or #2 globally:

Keyword 1 - 590 global searches - 66 visitors
Keyword 2 - 880 global searches - 33 visitors
Keyword 3 - 1900 global searches - 5 visitors
Keyword 4 - 320 UK searches - 7 visitors
Keyword 5 - 590 UK searches - 94 visitors

Anecdotal evidence says you should expect 5% to 10% of search volume to materialise as traffic.

The question now becomes, based on a likely conversion rate and known commission/fee, plus costs to create a site and achieve top ranking for the phrase, is this a winning proposition?

webgeek did a great job explaining that, however, I found that when looking for a niche market is best to start with things you like, passions, hobbies, that sort of things, it's almost impossible to be successful in a business you have no real interest for.

Hi Webgeek, thank you so much.

I have few more questions if you don't mind:

Here's a few benchmarks comparing what Google says are monthly searches, and what actual traffic was achieved in a month, globally, for several terms ranking #1 or #2 globally:

Keyword 1 - 590 global searches - 66 visitors
Keyword 2 - 880 global searches - 33 visitors
Keyword 3 - 1900 global searches - 5 visitors
Keyword 4 - 320 UK searches - 7 visitors
Keyword 5 - 590 UK searches - 94 visitors

lol, I wonder what keyword 3 is with so many searches and only 5 visitors.

The question now becomes, based on a likely conversion rate and known commission/fee, plus costs to create a site and achieve top ranking for the phrase, is this a winning proposition?

thats a deep question. You see, there are many websites and blogs about online games such as WOW and LOL. I want to start a website about Tekken (Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is the latest). I'm just not confident if it will make money for me not. How many montly searches do you think there should be?

I see this advice been given all the time, I don't see the point in starting something I'm passionate about if its not going to make me any money. Business and hobbies are not quite the same.

If you wan't to see some of the keywords relating and volumes, have a look at how the Tekkenpedia site is doing: https://ahrefs.com/keywords/organic-keywords/subdomains/eng.tekkenpedia.com

Not sure what monetisation you've got in mind for this one, but it's a job which is definitely bigger than a toaster.

I'd bet this one is 40k searches and it'll net 4k visitors if you hit #2 (brand will likely keep #1. If you can accomplish that, it'll be a nobrainer to grab up all the derivatives and quadruple the traffic.

Check the exact match box in google keyword tool and you will see the more realistic figures which will be dramatically lower than the global ones. It'll explain why competition is low!

Everybody is searching for the same thing.
The best way to do it, is just to be inquisitive of the world around you.
look at the problems/Issue that you encounter in your everyday life, and think about how you could improve or eradicate those problems. You'll soon find that opportunities present themselve everyday!
