Help me sell my bespoke software

Hello, first post…
I’m looking for advice in marketing a software product. I’ve recently created a stand-alone self-assessment/documentation application that can be used for e-learning (schools), employee training and /or a company’s electronic documentation purposes. However, I’m a programmer and am unsure which direction to take it, and also how to market and sell it. The possibilities I see are as follows:
1) Sell the service, where I design and populate the software with the client’s information.
2) Sell the application, where I design initial “shell”, and licence it. Offer training, instructions, and support for the client to populate it with their information.

I believe the primary industries that would benefit from an SA CD are government, academia, and manufacturing. Other industries would include engineering, oil and gas, military, IT and design.

If anyone has any advice on where I should take the app or if anyone is interested in learning more about it, please get in touch.

I'd say offer both options, best way to go really.

as for marketing, you need to go to the organisations yourself, or send a sales person, and sit down with them. Tell them about your product, show a demo, presentation and seal the deal.

Along with that gentech5 said, Offer the organisations a 30 day trial or longer to see how the software fits in with the company and how it makes things easier.

can you clarify self assement please, do you mean the yearly accountancy form or something else?

Have you got customers at the moment? You need to define your target market and then go after them. I would say product sales every time as this can often lead to service/consultancy work anyway as the product cost is typically cheaper than the consultancy cost.

Self-assessment, as in e-learning. The user reviews materials and diagrams, then takes one of several tests which are scored but not reported. Basically learning with feedback.

I know what e-learning it, but I am not clear about what your teaching people, does it allow to build your own lessons etc or are the topics fixed?

Yes, it's customisable, so admins can just enter topics, photos, diagrams, videos, quiz questions, etc into an XML document and it would populate. Or, I could customise it for them. Certain things like colours and buttons would have to be created for the initial shell.

this probably won't help, but I would look into taking on a partner who has skills in setting up courses, then build a web site providing courses for a fee and on the back of that either sell partner programs so other people can setup web sites providing their own courses.
