Hi i have just started a new business fixing telephone extensions and faults.

I have a website ready to go live on google but wanted to know how to get me noticed .I have put leaflets in shop windows and just got my car signed up.

The internet is where i am picking up business but only on a small scale.
Am i missing out on work or is quite out there.

If you have just started up then you might want to consider sending a press release to the PR submission sites. To get your website ranked higher you'll need some SEO including backlinks and to get exposure for your website and some free traffic you might consider having a video created and submitted to Youtube. You've got to let everbody know you're there.

Do you have any social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter etc) ? If not you might want to consider one for the business and get all your friends and colleagues to either 'like it' or join the group. This could get you some publicity.

You could also look at some online business directories where you can give a description of the services offered. If you have provided these services already then get some testimonials from customers and add them to the directory. FreeIndex is quite a good one and as the name suggests it is free.

Are you targeting the right search phrases? Know daily search volumes, etc. I work with lots of clients who have websites that look great but don't perform, specialising in small business and start up.

Send me the details of the site in a message and happy to have a quick look.

It sounds like a location based business. I would make sure you are on:

- Yell.com, I believe it's free but you can also advertise with them.
- Google places
- SEO with location targetting i.e. target keywords with your target locations such as "telephone fixing in essex". They are easier to rank for and also will convert better than targetting something generic like "telephone fixing" alone
- Google adword with location targetting (same as above)

Patience is going to be required. Getting noticed by the search engines is not the hard part. If you have an XML sitemap, Google and Bing will crawl you. Register for Google Webmaster Tools and ditto for Bing.

The real challenge is to get your site into a more visible position. You've had some excellent advice from the other members here already such as keywords etc etc.

Something I would like to add is that you may want to consider adding a blog to your site. Allow comments and update it frequently: at least once a week but preferably twice. Use SEO techniques when you blog. If unsure what these are, let us know. I am more than happy to offer you some pointers. When you make an update to your site, you force crawls.

Submit you blog via sharing sites such as reddit, Stumble, Digg, Social Media Sites where you have pages set up, etc.

A blog will help your site plump up. Great Google doesn't like them skinny. If you write great blogs, you could garner some backlinks in the process. All of these things will help your reputation improve with the search engines.

Good luck and let us know how your site is doing :)

Thanks again for all this great advice.
I want to give free advice for telephone problems people may have and then they will not get ripped off by the big telephone companys.

A blog is a great idea as i can reach alot of people and answer their questions about call out charges by the big telephone companys and build my reputation up on trust.

If they want someone to come out and fault find their problem or want a telephone extension ,hopefully i will be first on the list.

This is all new to me and i am taking it on board,i will be going back to my web designer and pointing out all these great answers.

I just needed this helping hand to get me started and to bring in work so i can support my family.i need to start learning again.
