Hi All, i have been wanting to start my own business for a long while now but i am still a bit afraid to jump in and get wet! I would love to have my own cafe as I love to cook but its finding the right place to set up and with todays climate is it a good idea to be looking in to this more?

Also if anyone could give a bit more information on the following would be very much appreciated :)

- how much is the rough start up costs for a cafe?
- how do i find a good place to start up? (my town is too small and not ideal!)

Thank you

im not the person to ask on how much it will cost etc. but you need to look around the possible places where you may be setting up. If there is too much competition your not gonna get a great deal of business. Its always good to go near places where alot of people are e.g. colleges, football grounds things like that

Thanks :) i need all the help i can get!

I was also wondering if anyone out there who has their own cafe could tell me more about how they found their first year and if there is any profit to be made or is it a slow and steady business?

Thanks everyone :)

I dont have a cafe, but bought a Fish and Chip shop. The first year was very hard, and I had to keep two jobs working 16 hour days just to stop me going under. Now its established we are flying.

My advice is that you need to have a clear idea what you want to do. Competition is nothing to fear, if you put out better food, people will come. Your standards must be high, and your prices keen to entice people in.

For the right business you could make a comfortable living.

Finding a premise is good idea. try Daltons Weekly. They will have loads for sale, go and visit some, ask questions.

If your starting from scratch, you will need a premise with A3. If it hasnt got it you will need to apply to the local council for planning.

Beware of lease costs!! Monthly rent can kill you.

Legal fees to get you started will be probably in the region of 3k. Then you will have 3 months rent to pay upfront.(This can change according to lease)

You will have stock to buy, and also marketing costs.
