HELP! E-commerce solution or wordpress + shopping cart

We need a new e-commerce website, our current site is zencart based and is rather a mess. We currently offer over 500 products on the site but plan to reduce this number. It has been suggested that we look at having a wordpress based site with a shopping cart as well as being told we would do better to go for a dedicated e-commerce package?
I'm out of my depth and completely confused by the conflicting advice. I would really appreciate some feedback asap as I need to make a decision on which we to go asap.

Many thanks

I'm a bit of a Wordpress fan boy but I'd advise against using it for a shop this size.
There are quite a few plugins and themes but I have yet to find one that ticks all the boxes. I think you can live with the imperfections if you sell a couple of dozen products or downloads, but above that I'm not at all convinced.

Yeah wordpress is designed as a CMS primarily so you are going to realise its limitations quite quickly with an inventory of over 500 products

You would be better off going dedicated, when you say your current site is a mess what kind of problems are you experiencing?

I strongly suggest you have to use magento for this kind of website. We are an Oxford based firm have plenty of experience in magento based website design and development. If you need any further opinion about this kindly contact me.

The tissu dot co dot uk is the site we recently done in magento and it has more than 700 products and no problem at all so far.

Just to echo what others have said - I would stay away from wordpress for this. It's not really what it is designed for and you will soon find you have out grown it.

With out seeing your site its hard to give you a definitive answer. Magento is a fantastic platform, but could be quite an expensive solution for you.

I am not sure why having to do lots of SEO work would need a brand new site!? Why don't you just work on your content and improving what you have got.

The other option is to re skin your zen cart shop. I like zen cart and have had a lot of fun building shops in it. It's perhaps not as powerful as magento but is still a nice bit of software. At least that way you can kep all your product data in the same database.

if you want to PM your address I can try and give you a bit more in depth advice.

My personal recommendation is for Jshop - but that's because it's the cart that we are most familar with. It's flexible and advanced enough for most applications.

I don't understand the clamour for Magento.... but that's just a personal opinion.

Sorry for the double posting..... crazy vBulletin
