Hi, hope you're well. I have just configured a VirtualBox on my Win10 PC to allow me to use some old software within a Windows XP VM. The software is for an old scanner and therefore Exports the pictures to a fixed folder (can't be changed) within the VM - C:/Scan

The Network is set to Bidged network, I am able to see NAS drives & other PCs on the network from the Windows XP guest (Virtual machine). But up to now, I am unable to see the Virtual machine's PC in the network part of the host PC.

Is there any way of getting the guest PC (VM) to be visible in the network? I want to share the folder where the scans are exported to.

Thanks in advance. I hope I have provided sufficient detail.

    Hi

    Yes of course you can.
You need to install guest additions AND extension pack (which has a different free to use license)
Then you can map disk drives from host to guest.

    Cheers

Hi Gianluca. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

Do you know if it is possible to share a specific folder on the guest and then access it from the host? If so, how?

    Thanks

Ooh, it's been a long while since I had this issue with clients but I seem to recall this is due to the insecure SMB version that Windows XP runs but Windows 10 doesn't support. In fact I think it was Windows 7 where I first came across this issue. Google "Windows XP share not accessible from Windows 10 SMB" and that produces a ton of results.

Here's a YouTube video that might be useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxCAFHArgY4

    Good luck.

What happens if you ping the static IP from the XP VM? If you can ping it you can wing it.

Make sure in Windows XP " File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks " is installed

SMB 1.0 on XP will be a problem. By default W10/11 wont connect to SMB 1 anymore. you can turn it on

    for Windows 10/11

    1. The first step is to open the Windows Control Panel.
    2. Then, click on Programs and then on Enable or disable Windows features.
    3. In the new window that will open, we will search and check the Support feature for SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing.
    4. At the end, click OK.
    5. Windows will search and retrieve all necessary files
    6. To finish, it is necessary to restart the computer.

After that go to XP share the scan folder and apply permission etc.... for user and groups

Job done. If all fails install an FTP server on XP and ftp in

There are several ways to make a Windows XP virtual machine visible on the network so that you can share the folder where the scans are exported.

    1. Use a Host-Only network adapter:

You can add a Host-Only network adapter to your virtual machine and configure it to use a static IP address within the same subnet as your host PC. This will allow your host PC to see the virtual machine on the network and access the shared folder.
To add a Host-Only network adapter in VirtualBox:

    • Go to the virtual machine's settings -> Network -> Adapter 2
    • Select "Host-Only Adapter" as the "Attached to" option
    • Click on the "Advanced" arrow to expand the network adapter settings
    • Click on the "Port Forwarding" button and add a new rule to forward traffic from the host PC to the virtual machine's IP address and the port used for file sharing (e.g., TCP port 445 for SMB)
    • Configure the network settings in Windows XP to use a static IP address within the same subnet as the host PC (e.g., 192.168.56.10)
    2. Enable File and Printer Sharing on the existing network adapter:

You can enable File and Printer Sharing on the existing network adapter in the virtual machine's Windows XP operating system. This will allow the virtual machine to appear on the network and share files with other computers.

To enable File and Printer Sharing on the network adapter in Windows XP:

    • Go to the Network Connections control panel
    • Right-click on the network adapter and select Properties
    • Check the box for "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" and click OK
    • Open the Windows Firewall settings and make sure that File and Printer Sharing is allowed through the firewall
    • Share the C:/Scan folder in Windows XP and make sure that the appropriate permissions are set
Once you have enabled either of these options, you should be able to access the shared folder from the host PC by browsing to the virtual machine's IP address or hostname in Windows Explorer.
