You can use wordpress with the Awesome Support plugin which will work on most hosting servers and is free. Depending on your needs and whether you are looking for more of a knowledge base type of content you can buy various wordpress themes with support/help desk features built in.

We use zendesk it integrates well and can be customized. Previously we used glpi but this was more focused to it Helpdesk. Zendesk is a bit of both but works well for service desk especially if you use the voice open as it helps manage customers expectations..

I'll give a +1 for ZenDesk although it is a hosted platform (they host it for you). So you pay a monthly fee for it, but so long as you have less then 5x support persons it's really cheap (even cheaper if you make a charitable donation to their nominated charity).
We use both their Help Centre, it also has lots of plugins, an API, and the cool plugin you can put into your application/website.

We use HelpScout for one business and it is very good. Also use ZenDesk for another, great but expensive once you add livechat.

We still use Tawk.to for a third business along with Google Groups setup for our syupport users, admitedly we will probably move that setup over to HelpScout.

Also like the look of desk.com.

You have so many to choose from, maybe try a few different ones out and see what works best.

You could buy an off the shelf package that can be hosted by yourselves, hosted in a bespoke hosting environment, which allows for easier integration with other systems. if there's a risk of this integration being needed in the future, it's worth the extra initial expense, rather than doing the work twice.
