just got back from holiday in SE Asia and the whole region is buzzing with business. i'm in UK and love to import stuff from Asia and looking for advise. i don't have an exact idea or a particular killer product but looking at food such as rice, tea, coffee, fruits and etc to import.

where and how do i begin and can i start on a very tight budget???

All depends on your goals. Do you want to import foods from Asia and sell by your own or become a middleman between a buyer and a seller? Do you want to import on your own account or use somebody's money? If you want to act as a middleman think what value you will add to transactions between the buyer and the seller.

thanks for your reply. initial goal would be to try to build some trade relationship with smaller retailers but ideally i would want to import and try to sell to cash n carry’s. i know the market here in UK is pretty saturated but a quality product will always do well. of course money is also an issue.
do you have any experience in foods/commodities??

it is one tough market to get into but i like to stay hopeful.

Then you will have to finance the purchases by yourself, offer credit to the retailers, store your product somewhere etc. Most likely you will not receive any credit from the suppliers on your first deals so be prepared to pay them upfront.

Basically, if you offer these services to your buyers (make mixed deliveries, offer credit, deliver smaller quantities to them, guarantee the quality of the product etc) and offer secure payment for your suppliers you can do pretty well. All depends on your financial situation if you can afford these facilities.

Our main business is anti-fraud consulting for companies involved in international trade. Security of payments, claim handling, conflict settlement etc is another important part of international trade. You should also think how to handle all these issues before you start.

First thing is first, can you sell the goods? the last thing you want is a container full of something going bad... then you need to establish a good relationship with a trusted supplier.. the supplier should be able to advise you the cost to your door (including shipping). Generally you pay 30% at point of order and 70% when the ship sails, then you wait about 4wks while its on the water.. when it reaches the docks you pay the duty (check commodity code for your costings), and then its released for the haulers to deliver to you (assuming it doesn't get picked for inspection)… you generally get a 3hr time slot to offload all the goods, so get some help ready..! Also check with the supplier about insurance (damage at sea)..

    Good luck…

It depends on the goods you are going to import. FOODS? arent foods need related paper and a lot of work before you can really start the business?

But yeah, rice, teas are your best choices.they could be stored long enough. and you can take shipment method as it is cheap.

Anyway, just a reminder. You got the money not me :)

It seems you should prepare a log of relative papers if you wanna import rice, tea etc foods.

I think you can first go to ebay.uk or other shopping site to find which product is popular hot sold in the market and then import small quantity to sell. For your first time,it's best for you to be a middleman and later when u get money more,u can sell them by urself to find customers and open the market.

We from China,do supply shoes&jewelry in stock&order production and accept the small quantity. As I know, silver jewelry is sold hot now in the market and our moq is only 10 pcs to start for silver jewelry not only for our styles but also custom-made.
