Hello everyone

My name is Tom and my Wife and I took on the ownership of a local, very well established dog grooming business in South Wales literally months before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We most definitely had to hit the ground running. Things have been challenging as you can imagine, but we are proud to be named as one of the top three rated dog groomers in the whole of Rhondda Cynon Taf. We took on two members of staff from the previous owner and have been fortunate enough to expand further, despite all these unfortunate circumstances.

I myself have had experience in managing and developing websites, Wordpress maintenance and working in a finance environment so know quite a bit about accounting and business systems, and what options there are out there.

Always happy to help to try and put forward suggestions for websites, software etc. if required.

Your insurances will depend on how many people are likely to visit, access to the main home etc. Public liability will be your main premium. Try petbusiness.co.uk to start. Then, once you're up and running, let your home insurers know as they could invalidate claims, like theft, if they were not aware of your work from home business and insurance. Hope this helps.

Oh, and welcome Tom and best of luck! My groomer started mobile and then got big enough to open her own little shop at a garden centre. I'm sure it will all work out to whatever you wish to achieve! I'd support you but you're a bit too far for me!

Hi,

We were fortunate to inherit premises and a business already so we hit the ground running, but we use Pet Business Insurance and they have been excellent for us. We are also registered with the Pet Industry Federation who which also entitles you to a discount with them too.

There are other insurance companies but it is like anything... do your research and find what suits you.

Pet Business Insurance need to be kept up to date on your staff numbers so it's important you keep in touch with them on any changes. The good thing with them is that there are no admin charges for any changes to your policy at present.

I would check rates with the Council and general utilities, but as I said it's difficult for me to comment specifics because we use a retail premises adapted for dog grooming with all of the equipment we need.

Also, depending on your preference and experience on technology, but as someone who is very into technology, I would strongly recommend having an online appointment system. Again, there are a lot out there, but I have developed our own bespoke software because I didn't find one suited to us. Having this function helps to reduce the number of "no shows" you will no doubt experience through-out your dog grooming journey.

I am considering putting what I have developed out to the grooming market at some point but there are so many, such as Savvy Pet Spa, Shake Your Tail etc.

Think also about managing your money... accounting system, card payments etc.

Make sure you have a good supplier of dog grooming supplies on standby for all your basics, but also make sure you have someone who can come round and sharpen your scissors when required, because they will need doing at some point, due to the constant use.

I hope this gives you an insight of what goes on, certainly in our salon.
