Headaches

Lately I have been getting lots of headaches. I think it is just because I am under a lot of stress. Does anyone else ever get stress headaches and if so, what has worked for you to ward them off?

Been there, real blinders, particularly on a Sunday, for some reason, when I was looking forward to a day off.
I could have taken pain killers, but I didn't, haven't done for years.
I got my back sorted, that was causing 80% of the problem.
Then I got my diet sorted, now I very rarely get a headache.
If I do, it's because I've twisted my back, or eaten something I shouldn't have.
I am so, so glad I didn't ask my doctor about it, I'd be taking pills to counteract the side effects of the pills I was taking for the headaches be now, if I had.

Headaches can be caused by so many things that first stop should be your GP. Blood pressure is a clear cause of headaches, but they are reactions to the underlying condition - fix that, and they'll go away. Hence why a back problem can cause them too - fix the back, and the headache goes to.

Stress is a clear cause nowadays and not only in people who realise they are stressed.

Another one for visiting your GP first.

For me, my headaches related to being sat at desk staring at a screen for 12 hours a day. I now force myself to take a half hour to one hour walk a day (normally before I start work) and 5-10 minute walks 2-3 times a day. The short walks normally centre around me taking the grandkids back and fore to school.

The other thing I found that helped was doing something for an hour that 100% occupied my thoughts. Reading a book or playing a video game worked for me.

Hey there,

from time to time I have this problem, also because of the stress and physical and mental tiredness. Usually it happens in the end of the day, so just going to sleep helps me to wake up without any headache anymore. I've check it out with doctors few times, and all the time I hear only stress as a reason. So what I do is trying to relax as much as I can + from time to time I'm visiting SPA procedures to switch of my mind and reduce the amount of stress I have inside my body and my head. Maybe it will help you too, give it a try.

I used to get horrendous migraines that were stress related. But, strangely, I never got them when I was under pressure. I got them as soon as the pressure lifted.

So I might have been really stressed out because I was presenting a claim at the employment tribunal, preparing the case making sure the paperwork was in order, preparing the bundle, getting the witness statements sorted. Actually presenting the case and cross examining the opposition. Really stressed while also making sure that all my ordinary work got done as well. Felt absolutely fine.

The day after the case ended I would have the headache to end all headaches.

    Weird.

My wife died of a brain tumour last year but never got a headache either before or after diagnosis and the oncologist said it wasn't that unusual.

    Sorry to hear that John.

My dads friend passed away from a brain tumour a couple of years ago.

He didn't look ill and was still in good shape physically. The day he died, he had been to the gym that morning.

Unfortunately, because he was an international chef, he had kids quite late in life and left two young children behind.

    It's a strange disease.

Agree with Newchodge. The 'relief from stress' headache is a classic. Would also say that although a good idea to have blood pressure checked, for a good proportion of my life I suffered quite disabling headaches (eventually diagnosed as migraine) despite having low blood pressure i.e. not just 'okay' blood pressure but below normal or below the normal for most people.

I rarely get headaches now mostly because over the years I identified a number of triggers including the biggest one which was of all things instant coffee though I can drink the real stuff with no problems (apparently there is a difference in the type of bean used to manufacture instant coffee), bright sunlight (solved by a decent pair of sunglasses), dehydration (solved by carrying a container of water around with me). Like many migraine sufferers I've learned that I must eat regularly and that includes not missing breakfast or having a late breakfast because of having a lie in. The latter is rather sad (though it does related of course to the 'relief of stress' weekend headache which so many people get) but the way round it is to get up make a cup of tea, grab a banana or biscuit, go back to bed to consume and go back to sleep.

Hi! If your headache is stress-related, then you can choose to take some medicines to alleviate the pain. And if you're not into medicines, then you can choose a good ol' fashion rest to relax your nerves in the head area and calm your senses... It works for me. I hope this will work for you...:)

If your car starts to overheat it might well be that the caravan you insist on towing is causing it, so swapping the caravan for a small, lighter one may well reduce the overheating. Trouble is the towing could also be revealing the fact that the cylinder head gasket has a small leak and the next time you need to get up the unexpected steep hill, even with your lighter caravan, it fails with catastrophic results. Would it not have been better to let the mechanic check it in the first place?

The analogy is sound, but honestly - whilst stress can of course cause headaches, but you need to check to make sure there's not something underlying it. My doctor is quite blunt about stuff like this. As he said to me - did you ever have stress and not get a headache? So what has changed? Age? Physical fitness? Poor diet? Before deciding if stress is the culprit - you need to work out of it is the cause, or the revealer of something else.

Last year I was having migraines every single day. I finally went to the doctor and found out that even though I am quite young, my blood pressure was extremely high and that is why I was having the migraines. I was put on a low does medication to regulate it and as soon as I started taking the medication my migraines were gone. So you may want to keep an eye on that and get it checked out if it persists. I still get the occasional menstrual or stress related headache and diffusing essential oils (namely peppermint and lavender) works well to alleviate that pain without medication.

Most common factors to headaches are as follows:

    Stress
    Lack of the sun
    tiredness
    poor posture
    skipping meals
    dehydration
    alcohol
    processed meats (that contain Nitrates)
    and don't forget lighting...

then you go into the more deeper issues... which I'm sure you won't want to hear from anyone but a doctor...

Definitely speak to your Doctor - getting causes offline is easy, it's the remedy that's the hardest part... until you've ruled everything out there's no saying what it actually is caused by.

Visit any coffee plantation in Guatemala or Costa Rica and they will admit that their lowest quality beans get bought by Nescafe and Maxwell House. I was impressed that the best organic coffee was bought by Costa.
