hello guys,

I am trying to register for vat, and have gone through all the available info on the hmrc website. Not sure if it is just me, but it seems that the info on the website keeps taking you round circles

So, I already have a user id and password (to do my annual self assignment), i followed the instructions on the site, logged in, then:

1) click on "register for HMRC taxes"
2) then it advised i need a new user id and password before i can register for business taxes.
3) so i logged out and create an account
4) I then clicked "Register for HMRC taxes"
5) then i clicked "I want to sign up to use the online service for a tax for which the business is already registered"
6) clicked individual
7) selected VAT (submit return or change details)
8) clicked next and opened a new account

But then it asks for Vat registration number, which I don't have one, but the website does not show how I can obtain one.

If someone could give me some clear instructions as to what I need to do to register for vat, then that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have followed your advice, and this is what i have done, but it is still not bringing me to a registration page, please help.

this is what I have done:

1) I want to tell HMRC that I am in business and need to register for a new tax or tell HMRC that the company is now active, clicked Next

2) it brought me to the "What types of business can use this service?" page, and i clicked next

3) it brought me to the "Types of business that cannot use this service" page, and I clicked next

4) Then to the "Do you already have a Government Gateway account?" page. I clicked "I have an account - login"

5) I have logged in as usual, and it took me back to the "your hmrc services page" :(

Am i doing anything wrong?
