Has anyone been successful in selling domain names?

I appear to have collected quite a collection of domain names over the past couple of years. I have most of them parked with Sedo, and didn't really think much to it until someone showed some interest and eventually bought one of them.

I have now added the rest of my spare domains to sedo in the hope I might claw back some of the costs I've incurred buying up useless (to me) domains.

Has anyone here been successful in regard to selling domains? Any tips?

Cheers :D

The US tend to be a lot more into domain name trading, and generally they are looking for the TLD ones.

I suppose it will be picking up in the UK, I have seen a few people set up systems for it.

One thing I would say though is that DNS (Domain Name System) is probably not what people think it is, if you want to know more, DNS and BIND is quite revealing about the DNS system, it is a technical book but it does illustrate really what is going on.

For my sins, been doing this for years, love it.

You can get sales at the forums, Acorn (for UK) NP, DNF ..Wouldn't touch DP with a bargepole with the amount of scammers. The forums tend to be reseller sales, I'd stick with looking for end user sales for higher prices.

If your parked with SEDO, selling there isn't too bad, but if you're not it costs a fortune in fees, and they are more often than not, not the greatest place to park your domains.

But yeh, if you're smart, there's room for a few more successful domainers.

For most people with large domain portfolios, a pretty good selling rate would be arouns 2 to 4 per cent of your portfolio. From this you can see that even if you have excellent domains, you are unlikely to see much interest on Sedo unless you have a sizeable portfolio too. In the year to date we have sold 60 domains through Sedo - which is our best year yet.

So how do you go about your domain selling, do you register things that could sell on that have not really had any interest and then list them on a site and hope for interest or...

its quite risky i think before you know it you can have loads of domains and recurring fees and make a loss. Im trying to put a limit on what im trying to get together i think im hoping i will strike lucky lol

All my domains are listed on Sedo. They are split 50/50 between names that were drop caught or names that are still free to register. There are still worthwhile names that have not been registered but you have to search hard. You really need to do your research though as you can end up wasting loads of money - the Google Adwords external tool is really useful for trying to identify what might be worth registering in terms of keyword domains.

The Acorn Domains forum mentioned elsewhere in the thread is a great place to learn more. Before you buy any domains, read as much as you can on there.
