I've ten years experience in digital strategy and and just completed a masters in digital marketing which I've combined with freelancing to keep the wolf from the door as I study.
I'm now working on a business partnership with 2 ex-colleagues which is basically a freelance agency within our industry - we've got good contacts and oping to launch the website in the next ten days. My main problem is I need money for living expenses whilst I do this, so wondering whether to get a short-term contract immediately or risk having to do so later if work is slow to emerge or return payment.
I'm also playing with some creative ideas of my own which are a bit wackier. I'm trying to decide whether I ought to be very sensible and go earn some money so I can save the money to tide me over whilst I pursue these ventures, or just jump in.
I'm not usually a risk-taker but I'm feeling confident. This may end very badly!
Here are my businesses:
1 - the small freelance agency
Two marketing colleagues teaming up with myself (a digital strategist) to advise our industry. We know a lot of contacts, many of whom shed their marketing teams in recession. As economy picks up we believe we may be well placed to offer these lost skills on a freelance basis especially round industry events. We have an entrepreneurial mindset driving us forward and have started blogging to show we have relevant industry knowledge. We also have a few potential jobs to pitch for on the horizon, although our first pitch was unsuccessful this may be because we weren't quite ready for it and hadn't registered our business name etc yet.
2 - hampers
this is a mail order business to a niche market I'm connected to. I'm currently writing a business plan and doing market research for this. I only need a few hundred quid to start it, but living expenses are a problem whilst I do this so in reality I need more money to start this properly. This business would utilise my knowledge of online advertising and PR and ecommerce and is very scalable. I have high hopes for this idea but need to research the hamper/delivery market more first, probably at the business centre in the British Library.
3 - integrated publishing
I have an idea for a treasure hunt activity integrated with social media and the possibility of a published book. This is based on getting children and adults to be active and would be scalable across the UK. I have a connection in the publishing industry who might be able to help market and publish this, combined with my knowledge of social media. I still need to produce a business plan for this.
