Obviously Haiti is in trouble but there are always many similar needs in
the world.

I would never request or suggest anyone give money to anybody/anywhere but
if you feel lead to do so here are a couple i have donated to for years.

They both have reputations of actually getting most of your donations to
where its actually needed.

1. Food for the poor.
you can donate directly to haiti from there site.

Food For The Poor is the largest international relief agency in the United
States according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy and had maintained
fundraising and administrative costs of less than 4% of its expenses; more
than 96% of all donations go directly to programs that help the poor.

2. Save the children.

These folks are also very highly rated by charity watch groups.

You cant go wrong with either one.

The Tsunami - five years on (last night BBC2) should be required viewing for anyone actively helping in Haiti or thinking of donating. The problems highlighted will be even more intense in this case because of the apparent ineffectiveness of the central government.

This time round the problem seems to be 80% logisitics so it would be a huge step forward if the charities wanting to help without a pre-existing set up in would agree to work through those that do have some infrastructure in place. Without this every new charity is just going to clog the limited capacity of the points of entry even if they have the best of intentions.

 

Good point. I was very glad to be approached by the Robin Hood Ministries requesting us to donate through them. This way I know for a fact that the money will go to where it is needed and I will also be able to share with those who have supported through us - the direct impact their money is having. Can't wait to get a proper roof over their heads etc.
