I don't expect anyone to be able to answer this question but ill give it a go. Basically I am organising a large club event at a University. The hall in which it is being held connects to a building which contains student accommodation. At the event we intend to use hazers and other effects which may interfere with the smoke alarms in the hall, and so we planned to have the fire alarm zone covering the hall professionally deactivated for the night. I have since had an e-mail from the hall manager stating that they cannot do this due to 'regulations' and the fact the building connects to accommodation. I have been told deactivation has been allowed in the past.

Are we stuck here, are we being misinformed? Is there a solution?

Ask yourself this.....if there was a fire and the alarms were 'professionally deactivated', who's door do you think they will knock on.

Even if it was performed in the past, does that make it right?

Do this....contact the hall manager and ask what 'regulation' he is referring to. Then search out that regulation.

You can visit the 'HSfB' website and ask there as well.

Good luck!

Its not uncommon to isolate the smoke detction in a room for an event to prevent false avtivations of fire alarm system. However a proper risk assesment should be carried out and appropriate fire marshals appointed during the event to oversee and protect the occupants.
