Hi,

Is anyone a member of David Lloyd Gym? I'm looking for recommendations or complaints.

Mainly, why are they so expensive? They quoted me £97 per month when there is another gym in the area charging £45 per month.

Also, their website mentions Small Business membership options. Has anyone got one? Does it work out cheaper?

Thanks
Dan

They charge a lot more than that here whilst some of it seems worth it, the swimming pool there is dreadful. I believe the cheapest membership for swimming only was £130 a month here. But they can afford to charge it as people can afford to pay it!

I'm paying £50 per month at Nuffield Health (formerly Greens), which includes a pool and all classes. Though I'm effectively paying £50 per month to use a treadmill. My wife (who I'm also paying £50 per month for) does 3-4 classes per week, plus several gym sessions. There's a cheaper option without a pool less than a mile away.

Maybe they are so expensive because they are looking for selective people.

I think they don't want to have the the Gym Full and big agitation.

I like this kind of marketing because almost in all cases the people who respect himself will go where is more expensive and will eat where is the most expensive too.

sorry for my bad language is not native language

Why are they so expensive:

1. Because they can
2. Because they want to attract a certain 'type'

Chosing a gym is the same as hosing any other service - you need to decide what it is you want, how you will use it and the value to you - any post on here saying 'too expensive' is completely irrelevant as it takes no account of your specific needs & circumstances.

So there is the key question - what are your priorities:

- Basic training facilities?
- Classes included?
- Rights to use gyms at other locations?
- Swimming (indoor / outdoor)?
- Family vibe?
- Other

If you can provide pointers on these we can give mre productive input.

Some of the best deals with the training that gets results are the larger boxing gyms in the cities if you live in a large city .Sheffield boxing gym springs to mind if you live there Its run by Glyn Rhodes for those of you who remember boxing on the BBC !!! Ricky Hatton had also opened a nice gym in Manchester and with proper training staff

Aye Jeremy, a proper sweaty, grimy gym!

Not one full of men who can lift a really heavy weight once or twice and then stand around looking either in the mirror, or at other men who now cannot even walk properly due to the fact they look like they've swallowed a 747 :D

    Pansies.

I joined my local council gym. £32 a month, has 3 swimming pools, excellent gym facilities, loads of classes, courts etc. Changing rooms are not so luxurious, but I do not use those. I just go straight home and shower.

The commercial gyms are a luxury really. If you have spare cash, go for it. If money is tight, join a cheaper one. Do you have any of those The Gym Group gyms near you? About £20 a month I think.

Edit - might be less than that - http://www.thegymgroup.com/

No prices on their website, walk away.

I've been with Nuffield for many years and pay £350 per year for off peak and £199 for a course of five personal training sessions. Best personal investment I've ever made although I don't think that at 8am every Sunday morning, only afterwards.

    Life transforming.

Well according to JonathanSEO I am one of those who have signed up to a 'Poser gym full of business types who think they can play tennis and squash'.

    - why did I join ?

it offers a £21 a month weekend membership, is five minutes walk from my house, offers classes that I want, has great gym facilities and I enjoy using the (mostly) fairly empty pool, sauna and jacuzzi for just over a £5 a week.

And there's not even a squash or tennis court in sight :)

Dan you're the only one who can work out whether David Lloyds or the cheaper gym provides best value for you. Try both out, compare the benefits and decide.

Me, the wife and our 2 kids use David Lloyd. For us it's a lifestyle thing as I'm up there around 5 days a week and they use it 3 times a week. We only pay around £140 a month for all 4 of us, that's for use of everything at any time apart from the tennis courts.

I could not say enough good things about it, as for me it's perfect. But then again I've been working out for over 16 years and I feel great on it and therefor want my kids to be as fit and healthy as they can.

So for all the family to work out, swim in excellent heated indoor and outdoor pools and shower and change in excellent changing rooms, not to mention the social aspect we get out of it, as David Lloyd put on free nights where there's a tribute band or a dance nigh etc, all it costs is £4.66 a day.

I get some friends and family say they'd never spend that much on a gym, but there usually the one's who are overweight don't exercise and think nothing of spending £20-30 on takeaways once or twice a week.

I love a pint but now when I take the family out for a couple of drinks, I don't get much change out of £25! that's just 2 drinks each!. There's over 5 days membership for the family gone in an hour and a half:eek:.

So my point really is that if your that way inclined and enjoy exercise and not just do it because you think you have to, then David Lloyd membership is well worth it. If your not really into it then there's no doubt you will not get much value from it.

Also it is true that the prices do keep the chavs out, which can only be a good thing ...:D

Don't Forget David Lloyd on a business front, has to pay VAT and Business Rates and staff costs.

Where your local council one does not have to pay, and is partly paid for by the council through council tax, so in fact the people who pay for David LLoyd, who are more likely to be earning more and therefore in bigger houses, are actually paying for people to use the councils one cheaper. So I suspect, if it was all equal, the council gym wouldn't be far off.

    Funny old world.
