Guest Blogging?

(I did post this in another thread that I thought was the same context without a reply so I'm trying again on its' own)

What is the story with guest blogging? When searching you see in various places statements such as;-
"......you’ll receive the benefits that guest posting has to offer."
Unfortunately there is no expansion as to what benefits there are.

What brought this about is that I've had a request from a guy running a blog on keeping/growing an allotment to submit an article. I do sell to gardeners and allotment holders keeping out rabbits, badger and deer.

How would this work? I would have thought it better to put an article on my own blog. Would the the link coming back from the Allotment blog be of more benefit than my own blog?
Can I directly duplicate it or mess it around to look different and post in both places so get double benefit?

I found this to be about the best article but did not supply all the answers.

If you are a guest blogger you get a backlink within your post on the "other" site that is that benefit.

If you own the blog for the guest bloggers you get free content on the niche of your site.

Guest blogging basically works like this:

By submitting a guest post, you're basically providing unique, relevant content to the blog you're writing for. They get a new blog post their readers will hopefully find useful, and you get the benefit of exposure to those readers (hopefully you've picked an established blog with a few thousand followers), with the additional bonus of traffic back to your own blog.

It's probably the number one way of gaining readers, traffic and respect in a niche when you're starting off.

If the article the bloke is asking you to publish is something you think your readers will want to read then it may be worth publishing it. Be sure that it won't dilute your blog though. It needs to be relevant to your readership to be worthwhile to both of you.

The article not only needs to be relevant; it needs to be well-written, free from grammatical and spelling errors. It should also match the writing style of the blog in question.

It's worth asking the blog owner for some visitor/subscriber stats although if it's a fairly new blog these won't mean much. Is it well written and something you'd feel cofortable associating your brand with?

If so, then I'd go ahead - you will get a link and hopefully new visitors to your site.

You shouldn't put a copy of the article on your own blog but you could re-word it, maybe adding and deleting a paragraph so you have a second article for less effort.

Before you consider accepting the guest blogger, make sure that he/she can indeed deliver what is most relevant to your site.

Check the guest blogger's site and see how activity goes within that site (the number and quality of content he already has, his followers, how often new and unique content is posted).

Ask the guest blogger to submit a sample blog to you first and then carefully review it. Do you find the blog worth reading on your end? Do you think your target market can learn more about your own site from this guest blog? Will your own existing content match the ideas on this blog creating synchronicity between it and your site's?

You can publish the original content of the guest blog if you are sure that it can definitely be of good use to you. Otherwise, include some of its content especially the most relevant ones with proper credits to the guest blogger and create a second original article with additional information from the guest blog.

As the blog owner, you benefit by being able to publish good content for free. The writer benefits by getting two (usually) backlinks to their site and exposure to your (presumably) bigger audience or readership.

If you own the blog, you can set guest writing rules like accepting only excellent content written exclusively for your site, thereby avoiding unnecessary duplicate issues altogether.

Guest Blogging benefits both ways. The owner of the blog gets unique and new content for his blog and the guest author gets the backlinks. These backlinks bring in traffic to the website and hence benefits from SEO perspective.
