    I'm looking to change my current host to a closer to home option that has super fast loading times. I don't really want to increase costs to much, but I have seen some providers that say they are powered by wind or solar. I think this will be good for business and also give me some peace of mind knowing I'm choosing a eco option.

    What are the best names to go with fo hosting that's green?

    Sorry I never saw the title of the posts, i currently have my domains with 1and1 and the sites are hosted on hostgator, I didn't realise they were totally green. I just wanted a host closer to home in the UK.

    What would you like to know? There are generally two different types of "green" hosting:

    1. Hosts who offset their carbon, this is the most common type as it's easy to do. They still use dirty fuel sources to power their servers but purchase carbon credits which is supposed to balance out the damage done by planting trees etc.

    2. Hosts who source their power from renewable sources such as wind, wave, solar etc. These hosts are much less common as it's harder to setup like this.

    There are many hosting companies that offer green hosting solutions. As I am highly dependent on 100% uptime on my site I usually use the big name hosting companies. I rate these two 'big name companies' for green hosting:
    Hostpapa - HostPapa has taken the initiative of going green by purchasing 100% green renewable energy to power our data centres, web servers, office computers, laptops and office space. These energy sources supply HostPapa's entire equivalent energy consumption into the power-grid with certified 100% renewable green energy sources, such as wind and solar-powered energy.
    1&1 - 1&1 has made a move toward green hosting by working with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates to offset their energy use.

    when i decided to go on the web hosting business , i made the option to choose servers and reseller hosting that only use green energy on their servers, the only one i could be assured that they were using green energy was in Germany.

    Now i'm happy , lots of my customers are too, and The Hearth i think is a bit happy too ! :)
