Hi, when i first started working for myself i registered with HMRC and a Government gateway account as a sole trader. As time went by i took on a second business with one employee. Can i still submit my tax return that will now have figures from the 2nd business and from one employee (i took on) using my first sole tarder government gate way account or will i need to re-register?

Is the the self assessment service provided by the Government Gateway still the same for sole traders and employers/organizations?

Kind regards

The 2nd business is a barber shop with one employee and i don't work there its just an investment. I set the business up myself. I don't own the shop it was just rented out and one worker put in there. Is that classed as Self employed? Thanks

So i'm self employed yet i cant advertise a job vacancy in the job centre unless i register as an organization on the government gateway website. If i registered as an organization just so i can advertise a job in the job centre would that not conflict with my status as being self employed?

I don't see aproblem with your organisation being your self employed business.

So what your saying is that if i register as an organization on the government gateway website i can still file a tax return using my sole trading government gateway account? as i would have 2 government gateway accounts one under sole trader and the other under organisation .

Its only one SA return you need to file and have to mention how many businesses you had, in this case 2. Just keep records on income and expenses for both business for
a) to find out how well are they performing
b) to mention income and expenses details on your tax return

the thing that is confusing me is the registering as an organization as i assume that you do this if you have someone on a payroll?

Register as an ‘Organisation’ if you represent a business (including employers, sole traders and farming organisations), a charity, or other commercial or non-commercial organisation. Services include Electronic VAT Returns and PAYE Online for Employers.

You have to register as an organisation to access some Government Gateway services, even if you are the only person in the business. It has no effect on services that you are already registered for under another login.

So that would be a good way of defining a sole trader The Only Person In The Business??

So its perfectly ok to have a sole traders government gateway account and submit your tax returns from there and at the same time have an organisations government gateway account to be able to advertise a job?

One of my businesses is a limited company and the other is a partnership, I have a separate Government Gateway login as an organisation for each. I am also registered as an individual in order to file my personal tax return. If I were a sole trader I would still need to register separately as an organisation if I needed to submit VAT returns and/or PAYE online.

So HMRC get 3 different submissions of self assessment from the 3 different accounts?
