Google Shopping Results

We setup all our ecommerce clients on Google shopping either through Magento or we download data from the database and upload through tabbed text file.

I have to say most of our clients who use it see a good response from sales coming from google shopping so I would certainly spend the time submitting, however dont forget after 1 month your products have to be reloaded/updated as they expire

Is this something I could do myself?
I have done all our adwords, is it similar?

Hi, Ryan

When using Google Base to promote your products and services there are a number of tricks you can use to help promote your website products within both Google shopping results (using Product search) and where they appear the Google the shopping results in universal search.
Google Base can be used to upload products in a number of ways:

 1. One by one – If you have a small amount of products (less than ten) on your website this is a great way of adding content
 2. By uploading a tab separated file with products in – better if you have more products
 3. Using a feed to upload product listings from your site. This is a good idea if there are lots of newly added products on your site.
To get the most out of your Google Base Submission you need to offer the following information:
Item Name (title)
Price
Description
Link to product Page
Link to product image
Condition

As with the standard optimisation of your website it is important not to stuff keywords into the description or price. It is also possible to use your keywords prominently in the title or item name, as with the title tag you use when doing on page Seo on your website.
Adding fresh data to your descriptions and listings also helps with getting rankings for your shopping results.
There is also some benefit in showing Google some review information for the product under a category called “rating”. If you don’t have a rating option on your site you may want to consider using a review site to publicise your products as well.
Offering Google Checkout also helps to get your products more reviews which can lead to a higher ranking on the site and also offers feedback ratings.

Thanks for all that Alex, tho I may be back later to pick your brains whilst I set it up.

We have about 50 items that we sell and although we do plan to add more in the future it will be a good few months away yet.

So uploading a tabbed seperated file might be our best option?
Would this be done in excell? A different tab for each product?

Cheers
Ryan

I get alot more traffic through google shopping than through organics as im nowhere in organics and as its free its worthwhile having as a seller

As a buyer i usually use it as i can see pictures of the items on it and compare specific products easily

Hi Gemma

This is one of the reasons I would like it as we have only been up and running for 8 weeks and are still nowhere to be seen on google organic searches for 75% of our products.

I also use it if I am buying goods as it is a good price comparrison page

Google provides quite a lot of information with regards to how to set up your feed with them.

base.google.co.uk/support/bin/answer.py?answer=59537&hl=en_GB

Google give a list of required attributes you need, but there is also lots of optional ones you can include as well. I surguest adding as many of these as you can. The more you give google the better you have of ranking higher in the shopping results.

I would surguest using the XML method, I think it is easier to organise and not make mistakes from.

I would also surguest setting up schedualing - that way once its set up your feed will automatically upload changes re your feed is up to date and you wont have to worry that your feed is mirroring your site. Having old or incorrect prices wont do you any favours. I have set mine up to run through my database and create a cache file eveyday which gets uploaded to Google automatically.

Setting it up can be a little complicated especially if you don't have any experience with XML or databases.

What shopping cart do you use?

Kind regards
