We have more than one website. We have been struggling to get a Google Places account for the other websites because it's all the same address. Google insists on sending a postcard which never comes.

Can anyone offer any advice on this issue. I have complained to Google people no one responds.

when you say 'more than one website' can you better explain? is it multiple sites for the same business? e.g say you are a lanscaper, have you got like fencing-mytown.com, turfing-mytown.com etc or are they completely different businesses at completely different addresses. Also why have you not verified by telephone?

Hi, it's one limited company operating in different areas of IT. It is different areas of IT. The address is the same. I have tried to verify by phone and text which we have done in the past. It won't allow me that option anymore. I even tried to create a new places account. Nothings seems to work.

Scootek, you were looking for a business partner about a year ago now. Did it work out with the people that contacted you? (just interested as theres a few posts around atm about finding a good business partner).

God you have good memory. About a year and half or so ago. :)

No I did not. My business has been growing constantly and I have employees / small team. It was mainly to give myself a life (I have a family). I have/had a proven track record with making a small business successful (in a small way) and I struggled to find a partner and I was not even looking for a penny in financial investment. Must be me!

I feel for anyone who looks for investment or has no track record and is looking for partner!!!

People seem to not to want to take risks.

I'm in a town centre. There are several businesses at the same or similar address. We've not had problems. Indeed a shares the same address and we both have Google Place pages. The key maybe in the landline phone number.

There are a number of elements that will get google confused, these include address, telephone number, google account login for example
Google tries to automatically 'match' data, and it is a right PITA

A Google Places page is a page that shows in local search results with your business details, services, location and contact details. This is then linked to your website for your business. You are allowed 1 place page per business location which each has a unique NAP ( Name, Address and Phone number) although the business name can be the same. You don't have a Google places page for each website you have but for each business location. I think this is where you are confusing it. Google cross-references with existing directory citations to ensure you're NAP matches across the board and ranks you accordingly. There are other factors involved but this is the basics of it. Hope it helps you.

It is a cluster **** if you attempt to change a business name. Google are not willing to engage with most people on a one 2 one level.

I accept there should only be one places page per address, but does Google not recognise as a British individual, I can trade as two different names quite legally (as a sole trader)?

All I want is one places page! I don't need to 'officially register my business' as a sole trader, or whatever they do in the states (and this 'registering' is mentioned in their guidelines).

Anyway, I've deleted my previous page and started again from a new account.

Its not the end of my world, but I can imagine this could give businesses a major headache. For some key phrases the local places dominate the first page, so it is highly desirable to get listed.

You can do it say, for example you have an office in a business unit with several other businesses. Just use a suite number. You can do this as a work from home business too. Business 1 name, Suite 1, address etc. / Business 2 name, Suite 2, address etc. Just make sure the phone numbers are different for each business (you can use a mobile). Some people I know have actually hired office suites in different towns just so they can rank for different locations. Just depends how valuable your leads are. But don't be tempted to buy a "mail boxes etc." address, it won't work.
I know your frustrations and I know it's hard to get to grips with but it's well worth it!! I work with people who are ranking 1st page of Google with their Places page and they have never been busier. One tip for a work from home business is to use the "customers come to this address" and not as one would think "I go to them". It's seems wrong but it will rank you higher, try it.

As well as Google Places you should register on the new Bing Business Portal. It has a lot of extra features and even though it's still in BETA testing, it looks to be more innovative than Google Places. I recently wrote a blog post on it - Introducing Bing Business Portal

Im not a fan of bing it's algorithm is too keyword based just like yahoo. Unless you have some mega authority backlinks the you need different sites to rank well on yahoo / bing.

I don't think the sites will get enough traffic to make it worth the effort of tinkering with a place listing, i will have a pop though just to see what it's like.
