Google Page Ranking

Google Page Rank is not held in the same sort of regard as it was 5 years ago.

A lot of people new to SEO seem to just concentrate on improving their page rank but it doesn't affect your rankings like it used to.

Having a high page rank will encourage Google to index your content quicker though which is a good thing.

Actually getting quality backlinks from high PR sites is the quickest way to get PR,it is also very smart seo.Indeed any smart seo'er doesn't consider PR because it comes with the type of linkbuilding getting carried out.
Getting alot of high PR backlinks DOES affect your rankings in a postive way because of the trust factor of the sites linking to you.

If you look at the payday loan niche, the top site is getting linked to by a hacking trick. They are targeting PR 6 or higher sites, for a reason.
It can be done ethically if you can drop £10k a month, the top site usually banks £10-15k a day in this niche so it's not as bad as it looks.
I wouldn't do it while the hacked sites are ranking though as you'd need to rotate sites as well and they have a very well set up network.

PageRank is moot these days and bears no resemblance to how well your website ranks for certain keywords - a PR5 website can easily be outranked by a PR1 or 2 website. It's better just to ignore it.

Concentrate on getting good quality links from website of the same theme as your own, if possible on it's own unique page, e.g. if they've written a review about a product or service you sell. It's not easy, but that's the only way to get good rankings these days. Also, work on adding original, quality content to your website too.

I'll take a PR5 vaguely related link over a PR1 exact niche link any day.

High PR links drive search rankings much stronger than weak ones. That's true of internal or external links.

So, yes, going after quality high PR/high domain authority backlinks is still the holy grail.

Sorry I think you missed my point; I wasn't talking about getting links from a PR5 or PR1, I was saying you can easily see a lower PR website get better search rankings than a PR5 because the links it has are better quality, not just more numerous, than a higher ranked website. PR is just a measure of how many links a website has, not quality, and therefore it's pretty much pointless using it as any kind of metric.
