i did a bit of research yesterday into how you get your shop/ business marked on google maps with a little icon and your name. it appears that it's an algorithm (of course), so you can't request it, pay for it...

i felt this was a bit unfair until i looked at the one that our favourite local indian restaurant had and when you rolled over it, up popped a rather unfavourable review.

so, my next question is, how do you NOT get the little grey icon as it appears that you then have no control over what data source is linked to it? ;)

People can write reviews for you business in so many places like Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor etc. and you can not stop them from appearing in Google Maps/Places wheather you have claimed your business in Google Places or not (the little green OK as supposed to the gray ?).

So apart from making sure your customer write good reviews, it's better to "claim" our business and write a good description, upload nice photos etc. to balance any bad reviews.

yes, but we're signed up for google places but don't have the icon. i googled about it and found a thread elsewhere which explained that you don't automatically get a little icon, it's up to google who does and doesn't and what is included, ie source. i'll try and find the thread and link to it. it did include comment from a relevant google employee.

Our handbag  icon doesnt appear until you zoom right in on google maps, and disappears when you zoom out one click, while other businesses stay on on a longer zoom. not sure what the criteria is?
