Google Analytics

Hello,

I've written bespoke analytics systems for international corporations so that they can track demand for their products, and ultimately create what is most popular. This was set up on their layered nav on their eCommerce stores and on bespoke product configurators that I have written for them.

What you need is to hire a coder so send data to Google Analytics as opposed to somebody just setting up the code. There are things to consider, like User Data, Custom Dimensions, Funnels, Conversions and ultimately setting up the reports to give you the information that you want.

Quick tip if you manage hundreds of websites and want a little overview is to install this extension on Chrome if you use this browser, namely "Page Analytics (by Google)".

However, as a small business you'll probably just need to worry about the number of people that are using your contact form, how they're finding your website and what pages they're viewing (and of course how many). You will need to send data to Google Analytics to track conversions on your contact form.

Regards.

What you need is to hire a coder

No point in running before you can walk.

First you need to understand WHY you need analytics. Then you need to understand the key dimension of web analytics. Then you need to understand how to analyse those key dimensions and what actionable insights you will gain.

Once you have developed those analytical skills, or hired those analytics skill, then you may want to hire a coder to ensure that you obtain the data your business requires.

All this is pre-supposing that the that the businesses concerned has any inclination to develop their web effectiveness.

Alan is also correct, of course. But since Google Analytics can be easily installed and is available via a Google Account for free. Most websites will with some certainty require an overview of the traffic coming to their website.

Websites that have any relevant services available on their website, contact forms (most websites do), downloads, call to action, mailing lists, etc. Will want to track those and in order to do so, will eventually need somebody able to implement the code requirements and set up the Analytics dashboard.

The fact that Google Analytics is available and implemented on a good proportion of existing websites is a good basis for making a presumption. Though it can be challenging to go through and learn everything, so sometimes it's best to have somebody just set it up for you and give you a working output of the important information you need to see and then you'll only need to understand the final reports.

As you mentioned you have an online business, as opposed to just a business, e.g local plumber, I assume you will want to develop your web effectiveness, since the UK digital economy is one of the largest in the world, and the largest in the G-20, and values at 10% GDP.
