Google Algorithm Update 'MayDay'

Good Morning Everyone - I hope you all had a relaxing weekend, I know I did!

I found this video and short article with Matt Cutts talking about Google's recent algorithm update, nicknamed "Mayday" by webmasters that has got a lot of people riled up, as many claimed it seriously affected their rankings, and potentially their revenues.

Has it effected anyone here?

Has anyone been effected? I have seen some competitors sites drop.

Let me know your thoughts :D

Generally, this update has had most effect on retail/datafeed websites that have a large number of pages (e.g, products) dynamically created with similar general content.

The 'Mayday Update' has effected how Google looks at longtail queries, and many ecommerce websites have seen traffic changes since the update. So, webmasters need to add unique value through page-unique content (including adding user-generated content options and dynamic snippet creation), build product-specific page authority through deep page-level inbound link-building, and ensure that site architecture is as 'flat' as possible.

As usual, the first-movers in recognising the effects of the update and reacting accordingly will benefit...

I mentioned this on my website once I heard about this, have not noticed any detrimental effects due to this algorithm update.

Of course there is now the recently announced completion of Google Caffeine as well which may confuse people but again with this even, I've yet to see much of a change in rankings.

Currently, my own rankings and all of my clients are on the up but there is not evidence yet as to say these are due to any recent algorithm changes/updates by the big G as of yet.

It was estimated that google made 250-350 alterations to their algorithm in the last year.

Odd that they would announce on specific change... Maybe it was a super-big one.

It will be interesting to see how caffeine gets used.

As it stands it really only picks up micro-blogging sites and social. Can't REALLY see anyone going out their way to use it yet as results are garbled and generally not that great.

Still i'm sure it will improve at some point!
