Goog Local question

If i place my company name on sites and hyperlink the name to my maps listing does that give good value. I think i will have to hyperlink it with the google url shortner also.

the most important thing is having;

business name
business address
telephone number

ALLTOGETHER in one place - this becomes a "citation" (similar to backlinks for SEO).

Make sure they are the same as your Google Places details - submit to free directories, have it on your website etc.... eventually G will find them and add them to your listing (takes longer than indexing alone)

If you are trying to achieve higher position in Google Local better you include your physical address and phone number with local address in your website home page. Citation is Good and very important with lot of positive reviews about your services. Ask your customers to write reviews for your website and services in Google local. It can improve your ranking in Google Local results.

Regarding the business name. A lot of people will use keywords and not business name when making links... therefore is it better to make the business name on Google Places the keywords or business name? How do you balance this?

I would advise doing both. We do this for our clients and it works very well.

For example, Dentist in Brighton - XYZ Dentists

'Dentist in Brighton' is the keyword & 'XYZ Dentists' is the business name. We have had no trouble doing this and we usually get our clients in the map listings very quickly.

If you use just the keyword alone your business will not stand out and be memorable. You'd be just another business. If you use both you get the benefit of the keyword and your business name allows you to be remembered by potential customers.

Thank you.

How about if you are using the whole page title to target keywords though? Or would you advise against that strategy and only target 1 keyword + brand name?

No problem.

Not sure I follow what you mean by using the whole page title to target keywords. Could you explain a bit more what you mean and i'll try and answer?

Sorry, its early :)

An example home page title would be -
Brighton Dentist | Dental Centre | Cosmetic Dentistry
Leaving no room for the brand name, therefore we cant use your example page title - Dentist in Brighton - XYZ Dentists. Would you then make sure all local directories use my example title and use my example title for the Google maps? Or would you abandon and cull some homepage keywords from my strategy in favor of your page title + brand name?

Hopefully I have asked a clearer question now. Thank you again.

When we create local listings for our clients we would only use one keyword and business name. Also, the keyword we use would tend to be a local keyword (Dentist in Brighton). This would then be used exactly the same way across all directories we submit to as well as having the address and telephone number laid out the same way.

We do this mainly for recognition so that if our client's potential customers keep seeing their name when they search then they are more likely to use them. Using their name in the listing doesn't actually add anything to how high they are placed.

However, I don't see why you couldn't do it the way you have suggested, we just prefer to always get the business name in there.

If we wanted to then start ranking in the local listings for other keywords we would make sure that we get those words into our Places Profile. For example we would add 'Cosmetic Dentistry' into the business description segment.

You may find that others do it differently but we have never failed to get anyone into the local listings and tend to get top spot 9 out of 10 times.

Having said all this, the new changes that Big G has made to their local search results may mean that everyone will have to have a looking at how they work.

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions please ask and if i can answer i will.
