Just joined the forum after being a watcher for the last few days. I am 34 and recently started a business buying and selling collectables mostly on ebay. I have found it difficult to push the business forward, partly because of the negativity I have experienced from a few around me. Comments such as "stop messing around with that business", and once you have a job "a jobs a job it pays the bills". I have always wanted to be my own boss, and often found myself looking how I could improve things in former employers. Jobs are difficult to come by in Plymouth unless you are happy working as a temp, so I will make something work. I especially want to prove my doubters wrong, and am currently running through some other ideas I have to see whether they are viable or not. I hope to speak to like minded people in similar situations, and also gain from the vast knowledge that is on here. A phrase I read on here earlier has stuck " a business is like a wheelbarrow, you have to keep pushing to move it forward".

One key thing for success is to completely ignore any negativity that is around you. Just don't pay any attention to it, I mean zero. Don't spend a second worrying about any doubters as they will just make you fail. Instead, double your efforts into the business. The important thing is to get as smart and effective as possible, so look for business intelligence, and look for inspiration.

Also, working for yourself is way better than making money for other people, so good on you.

Hi Daniel and welcome :)

When going down the path less traveled you will always come under fire from people warning you of problems you'll face and how they've got your best interests at heart etc;
It is really hart to deal with this kind of criticism especially when it comes from those closest to you and whom you'd naturally expect to be supportive of whatever you do.

I am no stranger to this, and I encourage you to stay strong and keep doing what you're doing. Most of the time the doubters are those who wish they had the courage to strike out on their own but never did.

All I will say is use the negative comments in a positive way, let it be a source of motivation to keep you going and building a successful business; plus think of the look on their faces when you've "made it"

And a final thing I will say is if you keep doing what you're doing now where will your life will be be in five years, and if you pursue your collectibles business where will that take you in five years?
