Gold mobile phone numbers - where do you get them?

"Gold" mobile phone numbers have been around for ages, and are often for sale on EBay etc.

Does anyone know how these businesses start? By which I mean, where do these companies obtain the gold/memorable numbers in order to advertise and sell them?

As far as I know, a mobile phone number is issued by the phone provider, but these companies selling numbers must have access to available numbers somehow, which they can then establish which are more valuable, and somehow make money out of selling or maybe brokering them.

Does anyone know how this works?

I have no idea where to get “gold” mobile phone number. Eventually try to speak with your phone company in case that you really need one. However, if you are asking in order to establish your own business with “gold” numbers, I just have no idea if there is demand on the market for these numbers
