giving a reference

I employed a guy in his early 20’s for a few months. He knew it would be for a short time. He left 6 weeks ago, and I get 3-4 (at least) calls for references each week, which can last 20+ minuets. While I do not condone this, and I understand he is trying hard to get work, this is getting a bit ridiculous. There must be other people in the same situation, I just wanted to see how other people manage without a HR department,

The issue with the phone calls is that he is going around building sites and factories, and the foreman/manager is calling me while he is looking for work at the same time, they need to know there and then who they are taking on. An email is not much good if they are hiring them right away. The questions are all different, calling back is not an option, nor is a standard written letter. I will have to change my number…

Just contact the guy who worked for you and give him a written reference and tell him to stop giving your number out

Call him up, explain you're getting lots of requests and offer to send him out a written one to take to interviews.

With it also explain you're not to be contacted unless a job offer is actually made to him.
