I have decided to get my van done and was thinking about getting a short url that is memorable if someone is behind me at the traffic lights. My number plate is relatively short and and memorable. I was thinking of getting that and pointing to my site and wondered what people thought. Any other thoughts gratefully received, thanks

    Hi
My trading name is my full name. My number plate is an abbreviation of my surname.

That does change my opinion. If your plate (very obviously) represents your trading name (or a good part of it) and it is short, makes sense and is easy to remember then I'd probably lean towards using it.

When I first read the thread an old Sierra cosworth I used to see sprang to mind which had a barely relevant personalised plate. However, not wanting anyone be miss the fact that their plate was relevant to the car they had sign written the back of the car with something like Sierra Saphire Cosworth (as the plate contained the letters SSC. It literally couldn't have looked more cheap and tacky.

Thanks for posting all up here.
To be honest if my name could not be mis-spelt easily I would just put the domain name on, but thought I may stand a better chance of people visiting the website (which is also better for me as I cant always get to the phone so really pushing for that). People have commented "oh you have your name as your plate" so wanted to link it all together. Think I will get the domain and get the designer to place it where they deem the best place.
Thanks for your input, much appreciated

People tend to obsess over what info they have on the van, and what their domain name should be. In reality, there are many more important things to think about if you are wanting to generate leads in the areas you are working.

As an example, have you thought about adjusting the hours you work so that your van is still outside your clients houses when their neighbours get home? This can be even more effective if you get some postcards printed to drop through letterboxes a few houses either side of where you are working. If you want to know what copy works best on the cards, feel free to drop me a PM (I'm happy to give you examples).

A friend of mine got her car done to promote her virtual secretarial business some years ago. Over time it has brought her a lot of business in, and she is recognised wherever she goes. People say to her "I saw your car in the supermarket car park last week".

I believe the majority of her work comes from the number printed on the side, but still quite a few go to her site.

So, remember, it's not just while you're driving round that people will see the details, if you're going to be parked up for long periods then people will have time to read all the details.

Hi Ashley, That's good to hear, thanks for posting. I am in the process of getting it all done at the moment. A friend just pointed out that whilst working neighbours are more likely to ask me if they know what i am there for (and need associated work).

As AllUpHere says do what he suggests, get signs up at your place of work and drop leaflets or cards in the rest of the street.

We have postcards made up specifically for this, where we state "We are currently working in your street at number __, where you can see an example of our work blah blah etc . We have the printer leave the door number blank and fill it in with pen. This too works a treat.

We always aim to get at least another job from any existing job, and in general we do that. Also, as a minimum knock one or two of the doors of the neighbour either side of your clients and see if they want anything done. This alone adds £40-50k to our turnover PA.
