Hi all

I just had a thought and was hoping for your views on it.

Alongside SEO to get traffic for a new site i am making

Would it be right to contact my existing customers asking them to join/visit/take part in the new site - via email, flyers etc.

The existing customers would come from my ecom site and eBay and there are quite a lot that could join

I have a huge mailing list too but wondering if this the right way to go about it

Thanks

I'd be inclined to contact them and ask them (if they liked your product) to put a link and review of their puchase on any site, blog, twitter they have. If they copy you with the link, you'll enter them into a draw for a free bag etc.

If you want other hints on SEO then:

What sort of traffic are you picking up from "evening bags" according to google it gets about 3k search's last month.

This might be a prime example for all of those people that lark on about converting existing visitors rather than attempting to find new ones.

Or are we talking about a different site to the bags one?

it can be useful but u gotta play it right in order to make everyone happy

i have an email list from 1 site but won't use it to promote another site until i also have a couple of interesting & relevant things to throw into the email too, and then it will be a 1-off email, they won't hear from me again for a long time unless they really want to

Suggest making a newsletter with related content and sending that - but make it 100% opt-in.

I get a newsletter and it can be useful in keeping up with whats going on in the web world etc. Convenient arriving in my inbox, means I dont have to always search for it myself.

You can put your offers, discounts, weblinks etc in that permanently, as its less intrusive sending just a load of offers all the time.

But do people really mind being bombarded these days? I mean look at what the Voucher code sites do, they exist on swamping people's inboxes all the time.

I think people do mind and after a while they will respond by either unsubscribing or worse still marking your emails as spam. The latter can cause you problems with your hosting or autoresponder company which is far from desirable.

An idea would be to send them one email with the request that they join your site by double opting in to a responder service. You can then, having had their permission send them offers - latest interesting blog posts - newsletters etc etc.

It comes down to treating each customer with respect and the best way to get them onside is to be above board and deliver great quality content and show them you are the guy or girl to come to.

For getting traffic to a site, one should know how to promote a site properly. One could opt for different off-page strategies available like bookmarking, submitting good article having link embedded and submitting it in good article/blog site, forum posting, etc for boosting traffic to a site.

I for one definitely mind, further more after opting out of one site, I got even more spam to what was a non existant adress (unfortunately I have the postmaster account for the domain). I now make it automatic that certain emails get marked as spam in the hope that the sender gets black listed. If they dont care about my use of email, I certainly dont care about theirs. I wish it cost 1p to send an email (which was credited to the recipients domain /account).

Wishing those of you who dont spam a very happy Christmas and prosperous new year.
