Hello,

I am thinking of importing rough and processed emeralds from Afghanistan which are considered to be the best in the world. I know the only operating mines in the country but the Problem is they are very difficult and of course dangerous to get to but that does not bother me as I am no stranger to danger having grown up in a war zone for half of my life.

Since I have not dealt with gems before I would like to know if anyone here has dealt with gems and what advice they can provide in terms of importing them to UK etc

Any Advice and Information is highly valuable

Hahaha. Well, I'll take that.

A Family member went up to the mines found out the best stones lifted right from the mines by an American dealer all that were left in the local Market were stones that were too damaged and small to for it to be worth anything.

I thought the diamond industry operated a kind of cartel? There are lots of shiny rocks in the world so they had to limit supply, to keep prices, and the 'mystique', intact?

No Sure about diamonds but emerald supplies is definitely controlled by cartels especially Colombian and Brazilian emerald ''A lot more expensive than Diamond''. Afghanistan Mines are very new and because of the security issues the mines are not exploit by the government an all the mining takes Place illegally by Poor families in the mountains since the government has banned all mining activity.

Next step would be to sell the stones. Keep us posted!

Best stones are being export to America b a well known American emerald dealer, The stones left behind are not really worth the troubles so I will not be buying them any time soon.

If anyone wants to get in on some Amethyst from Zambia.....

Aren't they deemed conflict stones? May be more hassle than its worth, assuming you want to do it legitimately anyway
It is Illegal to export them form the country but A very well known American dealer is exporting the anyway and the Government does not seem to be doing anything to stop it.

Of course I would do it Legally if Could find the Proper size stones with the right clarity.
