GDPR and private messaging

Hi, hope someone can help me with one. Does anyone know the law regarding private messages sent between individuals on a forum, say one like this?
If not stated otherwise is it correct that individuals using the service as part of their site membership have an expectation to and a right to privacy, that is the messages will not be read by site admin or anyone connected to the site?

Admins and mods on Xenforo powered sites can't read private messages unless they're reported by one of the recipients.

There are add ons that enable admins to read private messages and vbulletin is the same.

That doesn't answer the question though but I'm sure that all people on a forum have an expectation that their private messages remain just that
