Hi Guys

I am looking to produce a gadget ecommerce site using zen cart but what i am looking for is designers who have used zen cart and can design me a great site.

The problem is that I dont have alot of funds at the moment and I was wondering if people would go for a payment that is via % commission on sales.

Let me know your thoughts

Ok, here are my thoughts.

You don't have any money to invest in stock, so you want to drop-ship.

You don't have any money for a website, so you want a free one. Ahem, I mean a commission-based one.

You don't have any sector knowledge, hence you're asking for drop-shippers.

What exactly are you bringing to the party?

I do know stuff about gadgets, but i dont have the room to stock stuff as i work from home.

I am offering the chance for anyone who wants to earn a few bob on a commission bases. All i want is a website built but i will do all the marketing to get it off the ground but i need someone to help with the site or build one

All I want is a website.... hmmmm...do you have any idea of the real cost of designing, building, publishing and managing a website?

Do you have any idea of how competitive your proposed marketplace is?

And without a knock your socks off (read expensive) website you have no chance of making any impact?

Do you have any idea of the cost of marketing a startup to give it appropriate exposure?

Do you have any idea about internet related marketing and all its twists and turns?

Honestly, good luck with your proposed venture but I think you need a reality check to be honest.

Hi Alex,
You might think that the above responses aren't as friendly as you were looking for but they are polite and constructive compared to posting the same request on a freelance designers forum. There would be a lot of unprofessional abuse towards you on those sort of designer's forums.

If you are a small start-up business, I would suggest you buy a professional looking low cost template that suits the style of the site you are after. If your business grows then you haven't wasted a % of your future profits on such a deal as you're proposing giving away here. When you are making a profit, you can use these earnings to pay for the custom site template that you are looking for.

Its going to take you a long time to build any sort of web market presence and will be a huge learning curve for you. Don't worry about starting off with perfection because established sites have been continuously learning, adapting and constantly changing to get to where they are today. It is better to dip your toe in the water with 10 products and sell these well, instead of spending ages getting 1000 products online, which no one ends up buying.

No, you aren't doing that at all. You are asking for someone to invest in your (very poor and sketchy) business idea, in the hope of some future returns.

Alex - don't let negativity get in your way!

I can remember wanting to sell things on eBay to make some pocket money. I looked at, and tried several different products, then stumbled across a couple of very different ones which were good products that I could get at a price allowing me to undercut the main seller(s) there and still make a good margin.

One thing led to another, and in a short span of time I went from eBay novice to powerseller gold and was making a very nice income.

For your gadget shop idea, consider a few things..

First off, if you bought some of the items you want to dropship, today, and listed them on eBay or Amazon, at a price low enough to compete and win on price alone, would you be able to make a profit? You need to include all expenses and not just product purchase costs.

If profit opportunity exists, then rock on!

At this point, consider becoming an etail supplier instead of an etailer. It's much easier to sell to a handful of regular customers every day than hundreds of them. Find gadget site stores, markup the products and sell to them. The margin is lower but the volume is higher.

If you still are sure you want to set up a shop, drop me a note here. I know a few people who, after confirming their likely returns, might jump at the chance to joint-venture with you. A nice looking cart is not expensive or difficult, for the right people. No guarantees, but I know they do these commission only deals with quite a few people already.

Footnote: Dropshipping of these category of products will often be replicas or unbranded versions of recognised brand names, so be careful.
