Fujistu Siemens Laptops - any good??

I am happy with my Amilo, but my friends older model fell apart.

The best deal I ever saw on a laptop was a Dell, which was part of a clearance. The Dell I had from work was the worst machine Iver ever used, fell apart, screen was faulty, battery lasted about 30 minutes.

The point is ask about any brand and you will get lovers and haters of that brand.

Your best bet is to read reviews for the ACTUAL MODEL you are looking at, written by people that ACTUALY BOUGHT ONE!!

I used to work for a company that used to make on-course bookmaker systems for race course based bookies.

All of those systems were Fujitsu based for a couple of reasons.

1. The CD-ROM could be removed and a second battery could be inserted - Not sure if this feature is on the one you are looking at but this feature was genius. It meant the laptop could do 5 hours non-stop without mains and there are not a lot of laptops that could do that.

2. The screens could always be read even in bright sunlight

3. Service. These guys really looked after us and our customers. Just do a search on Dell and customer service to see some real horror stories.

Hope that helps

Hi,

I have an Amilo Pro that I use for presentations and have had no problems at all with it. In actual fact for the price I paid it is fantastic.....

It is like anything, some people with have good experiences and some have nothing but trouble.

If you are looking to have the laptop as your main computer, I would recommend that you spend as much as you can on one.

Pete.

I have a FS Amilo for personal use.

Battery life is good - much better than my HP work laptop and that doesnt take into consideration that my FS is very much a desktop replacement (17" screen etc) and so was never going to be great on battery life.

Service from FS has been very good - it would appear that I accidently knocked one of the ram modules out of its socket when being nosey, returned it and even though it was highly likely to be "user miss use" that caused the problem there was never any question on it and it was back within a few days.

My one gripe with them which is more of a home user problem, is that they basically havent updated any of the drivers for it since I purchased it - and the model had only been released a couple of months before I got it. Whilst most the drivers I can easily update myself the only real bugbear has been the g.card (3d accelerator type) but then found a website that gives generic mobile Geforce drivers for download.

There are only three suppliers that are really worth looking at, for cost efficiency and support:

1. Siemens-Fujisui http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/home/products/notebooks/index.html
2. Acer http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/
3. Lenova http://www.pc.ibm.com/uk/notebook/ which is actually IBM

Dell - wouldn't touch with bargepole, support is naff, they are renowned for blowing up, there are some real horro stories out there.

HP - nice laptops, hate the price, but the support is good.

Sony - as HP....but if you have the cash to splash !!

Personally I'd buy a MAC....just to confuse matters !!!

Having seen some of the other responses I thought I should add my two-penneth. I don't know much about the Amilo, but in terms of general opinions on the manufacturers.

Fujitsu laptops are generally very good, with few problems and they have a good support base.

Other good manufacturers I would recommend looking at are Toshiba and Lenovo/IBM. Toshiba's tend to cost a few extra pounds, but are better built and more reliable, and have good support. Both are actively looking for market share at the moment and prices are fairly competitive.

I have had very few issues with Dell units (we currently use over 40 at our workplace), but I have heard about lots of problems from others.

Acer kit is well priced but if it goes wrong support is a major issue.

Sony is great for higher end use - but if you don't need the whistles and bells they cost more.
